Can you add a socket to an item?

The higher you level, the more sockets will become available. Example, don’t expect 4 links on your first set of boots.

there will be a master later which you can invite to your hideout, he is called Vorici and will allow you to socket items without risk (and to link those sockets as well) for currency/orbs.

Either way you do not want to spend currency/orbs on low level gear but rather try to vendor a color setup you need and make do with what you have for the time being.
