It sounds like you're using Split Arrow and Pierce. That's a good leveling combo, yes. But you will constantly have to make a trade off between sufficient DPS and mana consumption. Also, you're going to ultimatly need to link more effective support gems TO Split Arrow as you continue to level or it will become out classed.
You can continue to use Split Arrow as far as you want to take it. Most bow Ranger builds do include some sort of ability that shoots mulitple arrows. However, most are more likely to get this from Greater Multiple Projectiles (GMP).
If you want to gather a deeper understanding of the Ranger class, then I suggest taking a look at Neversink's Tornado Archer thread on the main PoE forums. That can be found here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1041989
A 3-link (3L) will NOT be sufficient for end game play. a 4L will get you up to the end game, but you'll probably be feeling the lack of DPS at that point. A 5L (or two) are good for early to mid end game play. By the end end-game, you'll need 6Ls.
What exactly you put in those 4Ls, 5Ls, and/or 6Ls will impact your game play.
I personally tend to build Ice Shot Rangers.
My main attack is Ice Shot, supported by: Greater Multiple Projectiles (GMP), Elemental Damage with Weapons (WED), Physical Projectile Attack Damage (PPAD), and Ice Bite. What I'd use if I manage to get a 6L I'm still a bit undecided. Chain is a possibility, so is Onslaught, Physical-to-Lightning (PTL), and Cold Penetration.
Rangers (who use bows) can easily be built around a variety of main attacks:
Split Arrow
Tornado Shot
Lightning Arrow
Ice Shot
Frenzy
For single target damage, I use either Barrage, or Blast Rain.
Regarding Mana consumption:
You need to level your attack skills. Otherwise you won't have enough DPS. Leveling your attack skills puts ever more strain on your mana consumption/regeneration.
Managing mana is something I find to be a constant struggle during leveling. There are various ways to approach this. There's mana regen on gear. There's Passive nodes that boost mana regen. There are life leech and mana leech nodes on the Passive tree. There are Jewels that can help with mana. Depending on your luck, you may need to use some and/or all of those.
Regarding Ancestral Protector ... I'd suggest taking a look at Mirage Archer instead. Nessa should sell it.
Hope that helps some.
You can see the Ranger that I'm working on (slowly) for the Abyss League here: https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/Unquietheart/characters/Keferyah
This is the one I played in Harbinger (which shows the eventual elvolution): https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/Unquietheart/characters/Keferiah
Note that I play SSF, so my gear is frequently inferior to non-SSF players. However, I did get pretty lucky in Harbinger.
It's either ranged attack totem (but you don't attack yourself) or it's mirror archer.
Split arrow+Mirage Archer support+Pierce support
It's actually very mana efficient for me and is getting even more mana efficient as I level up although act 1 it can be mana hungry it isn't so much in act 2 and act 3 will probably be better with mana.
Well, those three are good as far as they'll take you, yes. You have to understand though, Act 1-5 are the tutorial mode. The game gets harder in Acts 6-10, and harder still after 10.
You have to plan for that. That's why vetran players stress defenses so much. You have to have resists. You have to have a big enough life pool to survive unavoidable hits. And, you have to do enough damage.
When you're fighting bosses, kiting is frequently much less of an option. Some boss arenas are painfully tiny. (Bear in mind, I usually play a Bow Ranger too).
Being mana efficient is essential, but mana efficiency and damage potential are two elements of an envelope that you have to constantly push, or you'll get overwhelmed. The Abysses are actually a good measure for this. Can you kill fast enough to get to the Abyssal Trove? The game speeds up as you go, and enemy health pools go up too, even the "trash" mobs.
basically all i can say is use it while it works but be ready to switch later on. crit bow builds have a lot of good options.
But any other advice is more than welcome!!! Still fairly new but I've gottent he basics and figured out the crafting. I also use traps to slow them as I keep my distance btw and am working on getting the teleport clone skill which I Can't remember the name of to keep distance.
I just started playing again also and i looked for starter builds for bow crit 2017 and looked at the most recent i could find and settled on this 1.

I cant get any of the unique fear as i play standard solo but i make do with what i can find : )
Blink arrow is the transportation skill i think your looking for, this build has it but im still using those cross bow stand alone things since i found a sheath that lets me have 2 deployed at 1 time.
I prefer to take the best parts of a published build i can easily use then make up variations so its " fun " for me. I might not go as far as the authors but i enjoy myself.
I also havent traded at all yet cuz i feel bad PM'ing some1 while theyre playing lol
I typically run two attacks.
Ice Shot, which I use as an area-general use attack. And Blast Rain, which I use for single target.
For Ice Shot I link: Ice Shot, GMP, WED, PPAD and Ice Bite.
For Blast Rain, I link: Blast Rain, Conentrated Effect, PPAD, WED and Faster Attacks.
I have a defensive set up built around Cast When Damage Taken (CWDT). CWDT, Ice Golem, Immortal Call. I vary what goes in the last slot, but the "standard" is to put an Increased Duration gem in there. Also be VERY careful about leveling up CWDT, you actually want it fairly low level so it'll trigger more often. Also, keep Immortal Call the same level as CWDT.
I have a Herald of Ice and a curse set up: Herald of Ice, Curse on Hit, Assassin's Mark and then Ice Bite again. (I like freezing and shattering my enemies).
Beyond that, I squeeze in a couple other utility skills including Blink Arrow and Hatred (an Aura). If I have gem slots left over, I'll level extras.
I also frequently carry a second bow in my alt slot that has a puncture trap set up.
Puncture, PPAD, Trap Support, Point Blank, and (if you have a 5L) Slower Projectiles.
