Mods?

So don't know if this has been brought up before but I hear we can use mods in this game. What are the legal mods we can use? Don't want anything that's going to get me banned.

...Mods as in modifications to equipment/maps, I'm guessing is what you was hearing about.
However, people can use custom loot filters.

lol this is all it says as far as modifications

So it has to be something approved by GGG which is what I'm looking for. Modifications approved by GGG. I see some streamers have a different UI and stuff.

Streamers are just using custom stream layout or overlay when they stream. As for mods you are allowed to use hotkeys or one key macros for sure.

if you want use a modification to the game ask the support if its ok to use it, you'll find no better answer than there.

No, you can't really.

There are very few allowable ones, ahk for the use of a logout macro and there are some trade centric ones (some fall foul of the ToS) and that's about it.

Before you ♥♥♥♥ things up, you can have a look about for some then email GGG and ask them if they are OK to use, either that or use them anyway and come crying that you got banned "for no reason"

the rule for macros is 1 key press must result in 1 server action. if you are pressing 1 button to use all your flasks at once you are breaking the rules. you can however make a macro that presses your flasks in succession when you hit it repeatedly.

also there is a program out there that changes the color of your cursor to make it easier to see. that is ok to use.

AHK scripts and overlays are not mods. They are external programs. Mods specifically modify the game. An overlay is basically an external application that is always on top with a transparent window, it's not even related to the process.
Devs can't check those so you can do what you want (and since they don't interact with the game that's not actually cheating). It's like havign a second screen with a browser opened with some site that provides informations, except that it's not on a second screen but over the game.

As for useful stuff for poe, poetrademacro is the best, it's an overlay combiend with an AHK script (it basically does a copy/paste of an item, because the function is actually in the game, send it to a script that is generating an overlay giving you informations on the item, like the tiers of the enchantments and more importantly a price on poetrade).
