If you absolutely hate starting over, play standard instead, but most people play the leagues.
The Challenge League typically runs for 3 months and includes some kind of new mechanic and/or story. Sometimes the mechanics for any given Challenge League will be added to the base game (after that Challenge League ends). Sometimes they can be accessed via map specific mods from Zana.
Sometimes they're just gone.
There is a certain degree of transitory ephemerality to Challenge Leagues. Enjoy them while they last, but then let them go.
Mechanics that were popular tend to resurface eventually.
