[Spoiler] Captain Fairgraves
What exactly happens to him after you give him Chitus' Plum in Act 3?

When I did, he just... exploded. Why?

Afaik that was the intended result. He attempted to cheat death with the All-Flame but it turned him into some sort of revenant instead. To cure himself, he planned to kill himself (apparently it takes some seriously exotic ingredients for him to do so in the manner he needed for his resurrection), but something went wrong.

From the dialogue, it sounds like he planned to do something you wouldn't like, but your nature somehow interfered with the ritual he used and instead of killing and then reviving him, the ritual somehow extinguished the All-Flame killing him (for good? Who knows! There IS a new campaign coming out he might get a cameo in ;)).

At leas that is what it seemed like to me when I played through it.

Poor Fairegraves, nothing just seems to work out for you.

The point is ... the Allflame went out. He dies.

He'd already been using it to extend his life and he'd lasted far beyond the normal span. It was time to pay the price for that. He thought that the plum and the decanter would return him to full life.

Now, for a little amateur vintnering. A quick squeeze of the plum like so into the decanter... oh my, look how it transmutes the juice so swiftly. From material to spectral. Effortless. And what an aroma! Imminent death never smelled so sweet. I believe I shall call this fine concoction 'The Imperial Nightcap'.

All of that is a hint that what he expects to happen isn't going to be the result he's going to get. It's all foreshadowing of his death.

Not sure what happens to him after he explodes, that would be an interesting new advent in a later version as I haven't run into him since other than the in the harder modes that you get to later in the game. I guess that was his cue to "exit stage left". lol

Poe lore nerd here.

Back in Act 1, Fairgraves asked you to return his "allflame" to him, and after you do so he reveals it keeps him alive eternally. If he dies it will ressurrect him.

Unfortunately for Faregraves we killed him before he could get it working again properly so he died and presumably ended up like he is in Act 3, neither living nor able to truly die, so basically stuck in a limbo.

He gives us a quest to find some stuff that can kill him and he hopes him dying will make the allflame ressurect him properly, so he asks us to get him a super toxic fruit and a spirit decanter which lets items interract with spirits.

This does end up killing him, but it doesnt appear his allflame worked again and he is presumably dead
