Fix for newcomers about fps drops/spikes/stuttering
---------------------------//-------------------------------------//-------------------------------
[A quick update 04/02/2020]

For some time now, i've been using this program called Intelligent standby list cleaner ISLC to clean some garbage inside the ram when running bad optimized games and... the changes are big, big enought to put here on this old thread, if you are using a SSD, using predicted networking, even disabling sound and still have a lot of lagspikes (high noticeable on a summonner build or a build with a lot of projectiles on late game) i insist, try using ISLC, dont change any configuration, just turn on and go, remember to tick the [START] button and play some PoE with all the fixes from above, if helps please say so in the comments , if not, say too, so i can understand for what kind of hardware it helps. Cheers!

[The Fix]

Hello guys, i see a lot of people "new ones" have fps problems, their fps is good but for some reason there is a lot of lag spike, stuttering and fps drops every second. Its simple, its your connection to the server.

First the fix, see if helps you: the constant framedrops are because of internet, tap F1 to see ping + fps, you will notice the fps and the ping in this game affect earch other if you use lockstep. Change the networking (inside UI settings before selecting a character) from locksteck/auto to predicted and see if helps.

The thing is, PoE have two sync networks, lockstep is live, if your connection is not STABLE REALY STABLE the game will microshut and wait your computer sync with the server, while in predict the client will simulate what happens before syncyng with the server so you will not get instant fps drops because the game is not freezing to catch the server.

I hope this solve a lot of problems.

---------------------------//-------------------------------------//-------------------------------
[Low framerate at all?]

Other setting that is giving a LOT of constant fps drop is the new: Shadows + GI Quality. In ultra setting i get 30 fps at max, but if i change it to high my fps will skyrocket to 90 stable fps.

Try chaging texture to medium, lowering shadow from + GI to Standard shadow, low some configs, if not, it might be your Virtual Memory is not proper configured, even if is, then the problem might be related to your power consumption is not enought for you computer or even bad HDD, try defrag your HDD and see if helps, if none of this helps, might be a problem related to windows or your driver, first try updating your drivers, if this not works, try this one as last resource (helped me alot on Conan Exiles lag spikes and i do have a geforce 1060, might help you on PoE): https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1004600/geforce-drivers/all-games-stuttering-with-fps-drops-since-windows-10-creators-update/266/

Here is my permanent solution/set it and forget it workaround for the creators memory issues (particularly with Frostbite games).

1. Download EmptyStandbyList and put it somewhere where you won't move it https://wj32.org/wp/software/empty-standby-list/

2. Right click > Properties and select Run as Admin under compatibility.
3. Open Task Scheduler > Create Task on the far right
4. General Tab (give it a name). Under security options > Change user or group > Advanced > Find Now > go down and choose SYSTEM (important to make it run silently in the background). Tick 'Run with highest privileges' and 'Hidden' at the bottom. Pictures here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6568736/how-do-i-set-a-windows-scheduled-task-to-run-in-the-background

5. Triggers tab > New > On a schedule > One Time. Tick repeat task every 5 minutes (possibly excessive but it causes no issues).
6. Actions tab > Start A program > Point to the EmptyStandbyList.exe file.
7. Done! Standby memory is automatically cleared every 5mins and BF1 especially will run smooth for hours!

[The end]

Please if anything here helps you, do comment and let people know about these so your game will be playable, thanks and good game guys.

Ingame is everything on low .. except Texture Quality to high... when i set this to medium it makes no difference.
I´ve tried Lockstep and Predictive.. same Problem.

WinMTR shows no packet loss.

What I´ve tried so far:

- Options low / high
- Lockstep und Predictiv
- Windows new
- new and older Nvidia Drivers
- Vsync on / off .. FPS limitation = Nvidia Inspector
- Gpu / Cpu overclock and without overclock
- different SSD´s
- Ultramodus (Win10) - max Performance Nvidia Driver
- CPU Prio at high for POE
- Full image optimization deactivated
- Geforce Experience deinstalled
- Windows Gaming Modus deactivated
- Router Reset

Give this thing with the Task Scheduler a try now :)
PS: doesn´t help

Here is my WinMTR : https://pastebin.com/uawEbyet

Here another Screenshot: https://ibb.co/KFYkGXr
Predictiv on + windowed Fullscreen + Vsync on atm

you ping dose not effect frame rate.

If you use lock step you may stutter because of latency or packet loss but FPS will be maintained (a good indicator to tell if it's lag or asset loading is, on the pigger pauses do you see animations continue to play like auras rotating or lightning sparking while the monsters stay still)

And IF you are lagging or having packet loss, switching your network mode dose not solve the the lag problem, and actualy introduces rubberbanding where the client and server are out of sync (which can be very out of sync) causing your character to "teleport" into monstrs you thought you ran past and you end up dying, or take you into rooms you have never been in becuase that door way you thought you ran through...well you didn't, you clipped it and went off somewhere else on the server, and when it syncs you don't know what the ♥♥♥♥ has happened.

IF you have latency, the the minimum, turn the router off at the socket and leave it for 5 minutes before trying again...then if the problem persists, run WinMTR to your gateway while you play with the lag to locate where exactly in the connection the problem occurs so you can contact the relevent people to actualy fix it.

Lagwin the problem is with older computers the internet connection influence stuttering, i tried to be basic about the problem and how to solve so the game can be playable again. For some reason inconsistent ping DO influence FPS if you have a inconsistent ping and leave open the ping and fps counter it will show both fluctuate. Most cases from people with bad internet conection, changing from lockstep to predictive fixes they lag "in exchange for some rubberbanding. Its the best solution? No, but its the general good one. Hmm Thanks for the WinMTR tip, i'll use it too here in some games to test.

Fintz Happy New Year!! Good to know it help you! Strangely, i aways used lockstep, but the internet services here on my region for the past months is giving strange spikes of connection, I'm using predictive for now, smooth gameplay hehe.

Hey I know this is 2019 and OP probably isn't around to read this. Just want to say this post saved my day. Specifically updating my Nvidia graphics card.

My GPU driver hasn't been updated for the past two years (haven't been gaming on my laptop at all). Still can't believe this one-click fix cured all my stutters. All I did was install Nvidia's Experience software. I ran the recommended driver update. The software automatically registers some games on my laptop (I got Hearthstone, Diablo and PoE). So I clicked into Nvidia's page for PoE and pressed the "Optimize" button. Strangely the optimization actually pushed my PoE graphics settings up instead of down. These are the changes Nvidia made to my in-game graphics setting:
1. no antialiasing to MSAA X8
2. Lighting went from default to shadows + GI
3. Water detail and texture quality both high
4. X16 anisotropic filtering
5. Dynamic resolution OFF

I don't know how or why everything is butter smooth when my setting actually went up. Maybe driver update really is important(?)
I AM HERE. I'm happy to see this help another person, its nice to see more people come to the game and actualy looking to fix their game, because its worthy! Have a good time.

Prob what was killing your machine was the Dynamic resolution on your end, try to turn that on and see if the game goes crazy again, if does, please post your machine here if you can so people running the same hardware as you do, are aware that using Dynamic resolution will have problems. If that dont change a ding, congrats :3

If you have graphic stuttering, try disabling Global Lighting and set shadow quality down. That solved it for me.
I had by Radeon RX 570 fan running like crazy and incredible stuttering, like many FPS drops in a very short time period. Once I played around with those settings, the fan went down to normal and it's a smooth gameplay.
I can only assume some of the stuff is not optimized for this GPU or simply buggy. It always took some minute suntil it occurred so it might even be some kind of graphic memory leak that builds up and fully screws your GPU.
No idea. Anyway, this helped me :)

Thanks for your help on the topic, i said something about lighting on the aditional help, it looks like the new Shadows + GI Quality is poorly optimized, soooo its recomended to older hardware disable it or keep minimum.

Hey, just wanted to chime in... even though im sure most of you have tried this... I just bought a new laptop, 9th gen i7 , 1660 ti... did all my installs... threw in 2 SSDs and even went overboard with 32gigs of ram... installed POE and noticed that every 30 seconds or so the game would stutter... then continue, read through alot of these threads and nothing seemed to help.... untill i realised that for some reason i had enabled one drive... as soon as i disconnected one drive... i dont mean pause syncing.. i mean DISCONNECT you account to one drive is tottaly not active... everything works like a charm now... im pretty sure the stutter was one drive messing around with tracking the docunents folder... and POE being a game that stores a bunch of stuff there, was affected,.
Hey xxanth thanks for the info, thinking about that, maybe One Drive was using some of your bandwidth traffic? Its nice to know that maybe this can be a issue to a lot of people.

Can you do me a favor? Can you reproduce the lag using One Drive AGAIN, and after, with One Drive on, change your POE Networking to both options and see if one or another helps? If changing to Networking PREDICTED helps about the stutters it means the problem is related to internet and not Storage related problem.
my framerate only drops, when my friend spams as many Pyroclast mines on his Mine thrower build as possible.

but god is it purty. like watching highly volatile Jiffy pop.

This fix doesn't work for win 10
Another slightly odd tips that has worked for me is disconnecting any external hdds. I have my PoE on a pcie SSD and all the jazz, but would get frame stuttering of up to 5k ms about once or twice per minute = unplayable of course and it drove me insane. Then, completely randomly, I heard one of my external hdds revving up and on a whim pulled out the usb cable for it.
Lo and behold! It completely stopped with the freeze frame shenanigans, and this despite not having anything connected to PoE on that drive, it has nothing but pictures and movies on it. Weird as f, but it made this league playable again :)
