Witch survivability
I am so confused with the lack of info online about how to not get instakilled all the time.

I see advice such as "max res" and i understand what that means, but not HOW to do it. I have negative res in 2 reses, and I just don't see how I am to get to "max" (what is max anyway?)

on top of that, I also feel like i don't have enough energy shield and life anyway, they total about 2.2k at lvl 60

You need those resistances in your gear as much as you can. All gear, rings, belt, chest etc.... On top of those, you also have % in the passice tree to boost it up even more. Max resistence to have actively is 75%, but it can be raised higher as a buffer. And you want at least 75%. For example, if you have 120% cold resistance, having 50% reduction in that resistance would give you an ACTIVE 60%. So basically don't stop at 75% if you can get more.

Your life is surely low. Just concentrate on life the same as you would resistances. As much life as you can in your gear, and a crap ton more % in your tree. Don't waste time with gear that has 30 life in it. Look for the bigger numbers. 80, 90, 130....life life life..

I am no pro, but I have made some pretty terrible builds before. Make sure you are looking into nearby health/resistance nodes on your passive tree. I play specifically on hardcore, and when I first came to PoE from Diablo 2/3, I built what I "thought" was defensive. I was wrong. I more than doubled the amount of passives to defense and I still feel frail at times.

I guess I am just stressed about finding gear that fits all my needs... slots, links, colors, health, ES, resistances.... like I never see all of those together

look in the forums on pathofexile.com
You get more information and many guides there

Also you can buy gear from other players. Try the trade channel (but people mostly scam newbies there) or go to poe.trade and look for items

most successful builds in the game will grab every "quality" health node in range and only dedicate about 20% of the build to dps. Thats what th game demands of people who do not react instantly to every object swarming the screen and all the preety light effects.

Frankly the sheer amount of choice you have leaves you paralysed with indescision. Its the games biggest falling. If you want to feel strong you NEED a guide. At least untill youve put a few hundred hours into the game. Heck Ive put a few hundred in and I still find guide builds feel way stronger than anything I want to build myself.

The thing that gets new players is that the game start off so easy, after a time it starts to sneak up on you. Best bet is to go you the forums or YouTube and find some cheap beginner builds. And I wouldn’t really work on life and ES together. Just work on life. Because then you are wasting passive points on ES that could be gong toward life.

This game is strongly built around trading.

The more you level - the more you need to trade to sell stuff and buy needed stuff for your char for currency you got this way. This is waaaaay better than to just find currency by yrself. Unless you really pro and can do freely SSF or run stupid char what doesnt need specific things and can use trash items to kill Shaper xD

Long story short for ANY new player struggling is pick a health style: Life or Energy Shield and than ONLY stack that first in your passive tree. Nothing else until you stop dying. Then immediately get as much resistance as possible.

Most RPGs allow you to stack DPS and be a glass cannon but in PoE it does not work that way at all. You need over 5K either Life or Energy Shield by level 70 or you did something wrong with your passive tree / gear.

Once you get that settled then you can focus on learning the migitation mechanics such as dodge, evade, armor, mind over matter, ect. to be able to get to the big boy stuff.

Invite masters to your hideout so you can get their enchanting stations and enchant resists, life, energy shield if you're doing that kind of build, etc on your gear. Makes a difference!

And when do you start working on the eggs and dealing damage?

Who can’t handle it? You? Most players WANT a room packed with mobs. Killing in large numbers is how you get anywhere.
