Did a person try to scam me on poe.trade?
I'm a new player and recently tried to use poe.trade for the first time.

I find the item I want, and use the whisper function to whisper the person in game. I then whisper my offer.

We get into a group and the trade is about to go down, but then I notice that the stats on the item are noticeably lower than what was listed on poe.trade.

Whats more, is the guy wanted twice the asking price which was the offer I had made to begin with.

I have no problem with haggling necessarily. My biggest concern was the difference in stats compared to the item that was listed on the site and the item the person tried to trade me.

Is it normal for there to be a stat discrepancy between the listed item and the actual item?

Abnormal, always check but vast majority of trades are smooth and honest (in my experience at least)

Good to know. I thought it was suspicious. Ty for your reply!

The only time the stats should be different is Quality. I believe POE trade shows items as though they were 20 qual. Which would just mean slightly higher armor/es/evasion on armor or phys dps on weapons.
Any actual stat differences are a scam.

Shame you had a bad experience for your first time. You should always check and be careful, but in my experiences it's very rare to get a seller try to scam you like this. I can only think of one guy trying it on me and I've traded easily over two hundred times with the site.

It rarely happens, but it does, unfortunately. Good eyes!

If someone wants to change the price, or does not put what they listed into trade, walk away... it is a scam.

Items are not listed as though they are 20 quality... you can search by quality and that would be impossible if that was true.

The biggest scams right now are price fixing. Someone will buy up every item of something that is rare (but not worth much), then list all those items at really high prices, in hopes someone will pay that. Or, they will list a bunch of high value items at really low prices, and wait for someone unsuspecting to list their item at that price then swoop in and buy it low.

Personally, I use Poe.Ninja for pricing. One of the best PoE sites out there hands down.

This kind of crap is what made me quit this game 5 years ago. My friends have recently convinced me to come back, so I really hope this garbage is a thing of the past.

Today I contacted a guy about buying an item. He invited me, i grabbed the currency, and headed over to his hideout.

Then when we go to trade, i put up my currency and i look over the stats to confirm it is what i am paying for.

And then in disgust i kindly remind him those aren't the correct stats. He acts like he didn't know.

Now imagine how many people fall for this, because they are in a hurry and don't check.

Now sure, it is your responsibility to check. But this happens quite frequently. It has happened so many times that I no longer believe a larger chunk of these are an innocent mistake. Few might be, but it happens regularly.

The solution is really simple. Have a system where the item for sale at the listed price, is instantly sold and swapped over. No manual handling. It is at the manual handling stage that people try to scam.

I was able to prove he was lying anyway, because he said he must have sold it to someone else and they corrupted it. Then I looked on poe and there it was for sale relisted the exact same item not corrupted at all. These people are flat out liars and trying to scam people pretending it's an accident.

That is why making it an automated process, or at least having the option to automate it, would help in these situations. Some buyers could search only from automated sellers, to avoid such scammers.

it might actually be true. Poe.Trade right now is getting hit hard and items are staying up there for hours after they are sold. I've gotten tells for items 6 hours after I sold it.

Within the next week or two it usually calms down.

Im sure it happens but you gotta learn to check before clicking trade. Most people are cool but there always be few scums trying to ruin your game.

Another way to get Scammed:

After you checked the Item, the Seller cancel the trade and apologies with he didn't want to cancel.
so both repeat the process but then the itemseller put another item (much worse) in the trade and when you accept the trade, you lost.

So be careful and alway check twice!

I have personally done the same couple of times, when i have multiple of the same item for sale and i pick the wrong one. Always i have switched to the right item but its not that uncommon mistake.

Also a somewhat common mistake what i see, is that sometimes when you have a whole stash tab priced for like 2 Alchemy, and you put an item there that is supposed to cost way more, but cause how PoE trade works, as soon as you drop the item into the stash, it lists it for the that price. Which is what could have happened to you aswell, maybe

99,998% of all my trades in the meager 2000+ hours have been without any issues. So either you got really unlucky and found a scammer, or there was some kind of honest mistake there

If you ask them for an item, the item on the trade window should be the exact same as on the trade site, no deviations in stats.
wayfarer Jun 11, 2019 @ 11:16pm
Its simply that the "Normalize Quality" option is on (by default), showing the 20% Quality results.
The stats won't be as shown unless the item just happens to be at 20% Quality.
