one strike, five damage types
Hi,
I'm relatively new to Path of Exile. I'd like to make an melee attack ailment focused build which effectively split my damage in equal parts between the different damage types. I.e. that Physical/Chaos/Fire/Cold/Lightnnig each represent 20% of my base damage so to speak.

Naturally I have no idea how effective this is build would be and that's not really my question. Rather my first question is if anyone with a better knowledge than me know if it's even technically possible to do from the baseline, i.e. w/o unique gear?

Ideally I'd like to combine Multistrike with an attack such as Double Strike, Lacerate etc which already have a built in "multistrike" to maximize the number of hits per second.


Then again, if I understand the mechanics for ailments correctly it's based on the damage type hit damage so to be most effective for example Elemental Ailment I ought to use something like Wild Strike which converts 100% of the damage to one elemental damage type for every strike and thus gives stronger effect from the applied Elemental Ailments. However, that setup would leave me with having to get Physical and Chaos damage and their Ailments from some other source.

Yes. It is possible.
DOes it hurt a whole lot? No. No it does not.

You need;
A physical damage skill with lightning.
Call of the brotherhood (lightning into cold)
Pyre (Cold into fire)
And consuming dark (fire into chaos)
Your links would probably be basic; Melee phys, elemental damage with attacks, multistrike, added fire damage, etc.

I suppose you could do it (technically) with a phys spell like blade vortex/bladefall and just socket lightning damage to spell abyss jewels too if you wanted to go the spell route.

Also I want to be sure I understand ailments correctly. Ailments need at least 1 damage from its corresponding damage type to be able to apply. Right?

And if I, lets say do 100 base physical damage + 1 lightning damage with "100% Chance To Shock", it will always shock enemies. Yes?

But it will calculate the shock debuff amount from 1 lightning damage vs enemy max hp (e.g. 1000) and thus basically give a Shock with 0% damage bonus. Correct?

To summarize, an ailment is applied to the target if:

The hit of damage consists of damage types that have the potential to inflict the ailment
The chance to inflict the ailment is successful
The target fails to avoid the ailment
The target is not immune to the ailment
Any other conditions are met
Application by other means
Ailments can be applied in ways other than direct hits of damage.

Elemental proliferation causes elemental ailments to spread to other targets within a radius.
Certain ground effects apply ailments.
Slaying a poisoned enemy with Bino's Kitchen Knife equipped spreads poison to other targets within a radius.
Arctic Armour chills enemies when hit.
A strongbox with the "Incandescent" prefix ignites the character that activates it.

Since poison is tied to physical and chaos, will a poison gem really make Wild Strike apply poison of any meaningful magnitude?

Wildstrike can't do the job. Wild only does fire/cold/lightning damage. It has a 100% elemental conversion, so you never deal physical damage, and the only way to do chaos damage would be to add added chaos support or decay, it's not going to be effective and chaos is not an elemental type so nothing is going to scale with it. Also wildstrike only does one elemental type per attack, so it's for example full cold then full fire then full lightning etc.
Elemental hit is also a bad idea because you don't deal all 3 elements at the same time.


As of now, there is no way to effectively make such a build, except maybe dual wield rebuke of the vaal, since that's what the sword does (has all 5 damage types), and go cleave for the dual wield bonus. Maybe go raider with a max frenzy charge build, to get an overall damage bonus.

The main problem is that crit strikes don't help ailments anymore (it would have worked before by scaling everything with crit damage). So you can't make it your base, you need at least 2 separate means to buff damage, one for elemental, one for physical (and hope chaos gets buffed by physical, poison would be the thing).

Stack and scale your physical damage, use Wild Strike, then gain the Unholy Might buff.

The point of theorycrafting is to discuss something else.

Well, just for sake of completion, you could use the Force Shaper passive (https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Force_Shaper) to add some chaos damage. I agree however, that it still might not be worth it.

Ming's heart would get your chaos damage, trying to divide exactly by 20% for each is really tricky though.

Craft a weapon or 2 using Essence of Insanity

Equip a Heartbound Loop

Then in your item links you use:
Cast when Damage Taken + Dark Pact + Supports
Cast when Damage Taken + Lightning Nova + Supports
Cast when Damage Taken + Ice Nova + Supports
Cast when Damage Taken + Firestorm + Supports
Cast when Damage Taken + Ethereal Knives + Supports + Jewels
Or just use a Lightpoacher helmet for physical damage

Then you just run around spamming "X" on your keyboard swapping between 2 weapons that summon a Spectral Spirit. Each swap of your weapon will spawn a new Spectral and kill the old one causing you to take 350 damage each time thanks to the ring :steamhappy::steamhappy:

Plenty of life leech and regen recommended, especially if using Dark Pact.

There's decay in usefulness of damage. Maybe you get bigger numbers, but monsters also get more resistant and leeching becomes more stringent.

Physical > Lightning > Chaos
Physical > Elemental > Chaos
Physical > Cold > Fire > Lightning > Chaos
