getting to 100 is not like getting to 70 in d3. you cant do it in 20 minutes with a friend powerleveling you.
This system allow further class specialisation with 8 more special passive points that are not linked to level-up.
->most people stop around level 80 to 85
->Hardly anyone goes over 90
->the XP it takes from 1 to 97 is equal to the xp you need to go from 97 to 100
->Highest non-shaper map is level 83 and you get xp penalties if you are ~8 levels over content
sums it all. Absorb this op, 100 is a *grind*
You could easily define killing Atziri or the start of mapping as the start to your endgame which leads to having the goal to kill the Shaper. Then you can play through this process and, if you manage it, you will still not even be lvl 90 after you have done all of that.
Basically, do not define endgame as starting at max level like they taught you to do on other hack'n'slays and you will have a fine time. The real 100 is, to be honest, only reached through endless map grinding while having both of your eyes on the xp/hour gauge anyway, which is not the most 'fun' thing to do after a few days' time.
Stats show that, as was already said in this thread, most people quit playing their char around lvl 85 in softcore, I believe. Try a new build, get stuck, get bored with mapping - all reasons why this happens.
Thus, the best advice to give about the endgame in my opinion is simply 'don't get hung up on levels, just do your content, do your next biggest boss - and then chances are that there is more content in PoE than you ever get to do, or even want to do, on one character anyway'.
That being said and all the while preferring PoE to Diablo I still want to add that the timed rift thingy over there isn't half bad as far as endgame mechanics go, either. Just 2 cents.
