Why are almost all ARPGs one button wonders builds?
Only one that I liked a lot was Herowarz, but it shut down.

Also devillian was decent, but Trion happened.

This is anything but a "one button wonder".

Can you explain how it isn't? What is your build?

The very fact that there is a lot of support for an extended hot bar kinda indicates that.
Sure the ultimate goal is to minimize input and maximise output, but that's the same in most games unless you are bound to a rotation to work.

I play righteous fire. I don't press any buttons. I just walk over to the enemies and hang out with them.

You should check out Grim Dawn, It can be played very interactive, with a filled Skill-bar and still delivers a huge Loot system, It´s kinda the Balance between the explosive Gameplay of Diablo 3 and the in-depth System of PoE
People loving PoE cuz of the very deep Character Development, the huge Loot & Market System and atleast the Possibility to make your very own Build out of several hundred skills and a huge Talent Tree, even if the biggest Part may suck if you want to get to the Endgame.
For alot of People crazy ass amounts of Loot and watching the Idea of a Character Build evolve can be alot more addicting and interesting for plenty of People.
If you want a Action packed game, Play Diablo 3, While the fighting is very interesting and challenging it poorly failed on the other very important Dungeon Crawler aspects like indepth Char development, Loot & Stuff like that.

Very few builds use only 1 button in this game and the ones that do probably arnt that great.
You got your main attack skill
Your movement skill, probably linked to fortify. Must have imo.
Your 5x flasks. Flask spam buffs is pretty important in this game.
Then you got your support spell. Orb of Storms most likely, linked to PCoC, surge, CoH, procing EE or something.
Vaal Haste. Im always spamming that as much as I can. Nice clear speed boost.

These are just the most commonly spammed keys I find on most builds. Some builds have more, some less. But I never seen a build use only 1 or less key.

Hack n slashes are one button spamfest, that's the design.

If you change that it becomes either a mmo type (with slower pace and less mobs on screen) or a tactical game.
You can't really do a fast pace game with 30 keys unless there is some assistance.

Not counting the different flasks you always have to keep an eye on, I use four buttons. Essence Drain, Contagion, Whiter for bosses and a totem with Blight.

I'm willing to bet that unless you're running RF your build is probably lacking.

That is most likely true. Thing is on PoE you have 1 skill doing about 99% of all your damage most of the time. Same in D3 and in Grimdawn.

The reason for this is so you can focus your damage. If you are doing 5 different kinds of things, not all of them are going to be your damage focus, if they are, you end up doing no damage. Would you rather boost 10 things by 10%, or 1 thing by 100%? The clear choice is the 1.

Yeah, I do kind of like isometric ARPGs, but they all do tend to feel mindless and uninteractive. They have their satisfyingly complex item and character building systems and lots of loot to collect, but then actually using the build is limited, boring monotony. Games like Borderlands 2 are better. You have a lot of the same elements, but there's a whole 'nother dimension to the world which enables more immersion and fun exploration. And there's responsive, actual, full-fledged dodging, aiming, platforming, etc. It's so much more intense and satisfying. Isometric ARPGs are definitely lesser creatures. ;p

I just want a game like PoE mixed with Borderlands 2, but with even more fast-paced 3D movement and combat and more interactivity with the environments. Is there anything like that?

That sounds like Warframe to me.
Actionhanz Oct 11, 2017 @ 6:34pm
Yep sounds like warframe. Sadly WF looks terrible, has terrible gameplay, is 100% pay2win if you want, also f2p, but also 100% pay2win... meh sadly a big but still underdog game for the no-money-crowd. I would choose poe over warframe anytime.

Also, isometric ARPG's happens mostly in your head, planning, building, thinking, more thinking, and infront of you screen you just experience the outcome. Its more like modelbuilding or lego, just with virtual fighters. Comparing those games to shooter with rpg-elements is absolute nonsense. Those are childgames.

I mean, what you said about thinking applies largely to most PC games like Divinity original sin 2, various MMORPGs like Eve online, and Arma 3.

Spread sheet games are mostly boring to me other than X3:AP for some reason (was really addicted to it for a while).

PoE combat gets really monotonous after spamming the same moves over and over. Its mostly graphically stagnant for the most part (which seems boring).

I didn't enjoy most ARPGs long term, but did like Herowarz a lot though, just personal taste.

I don't play this game very seriously at all, and I still use different skills for tight spaces, distance, and depending on the number of mobs, plus a mine or trap and teleport. Most games of this type require these things in some measure for at least some play styles. I also keep a second damage type on hand in case someone has high resistance to my main type, or just for fun.
