Do you lose your league character after the league ends?

started a harbinger league character a while back and never realized that its only a temporary league.

No, it gets auto transferred to Standard

Characters from the big, 3 month challenge leagues get transfered to Standard (along with your stash tabs (which become "remove-only")). Forsaken Master and Atlas progression are merged (so you get the best of whichever).

HC and SSF flags remain active.

Some of the smaller races do have characters deleted at the end (for exampe, the upcoming Mayhem 10 day race WILL have all characters deleted at the end).

IIRC the reason for Mayhem characters not transferring over is because it'll disrupt the player driven economy in the standard leagues too much since the drops will be much too generous/good.

Is Mayhem really that much better then Torment? I already have more uniques from my one Torment character then I got from two standard league characters up through act 6, yet they will let that one go through to Standard.

Enh, it's not really our decision. The devs think Mayhem will dump too much into the economy in too short a time, and that Turmoil won't. So that's what they're going with.

I honestly dont care to much but that excuse is just delusional. Standard has had uniques dumped in for 5 years now this league isnt gonna do jack squat to the already moronic economy standard has.

but mayhem race gets deleted
