You are doing the math wrong on the "30-40% increased maximum life"
In this game you really have to pay attention to wording. The word "increased" means it's additive. If you have 1000 life and Belly gives you 40% increased maximum life, that doesn't mean you are going to end up with 1400 life. That number is going to be much smaller, because it's additive. Most builds end up with at least 150% increased life from skill trees alone. So now 40% added onto the already 150% is a much smaller number than you once thought.
For example, my one character is at 193% increased maximum life from my skill tree. Around 5700 life without body armor on.
Putting on a Belly will give me anywhere from 550 to 750 life depending on the roll.
However my Kaom's gives me over 1500 life because it's 500 flat Life, and then basically x2 that amount because of my 193% increased life from my skill tree. Generally, flat life is going to be way better than % life.
Now if Belly had the word "40% more maximum life" that's multiplicative, meaning it's literally multiplying 40% of your entire life pool, instead of adding another 40% increased life on to the already existing 150-200% you probably have from your skill tree alone.
