This took me like 2 years to get my head around. I kept sticking to the old mentality of other games where 'everything is equally viable'
it isnt.
Not by a long shot.
If you take any given build with its premium, build defining uniques and gear, sure, yeah theyre probably all pretty solid.
But the difference is really how gear dependent your build is, and honestly, how innately survivable it is based on your passive choices.
Many people run with builds at the beginning of leagues which are typically builds that, without any specific unique items or large investment, can be solid and effective, to farm gear for other, more gear specific builds.
On the POE forums youll find a ton of posts with builds, and ones marked 'beginner friendly' and 'low cost' are great for starting out in a league as they are typically what i described above. I followed a Summon Raging Spirit build marked as such and it has worked fantastically, and is a lot of fun to boot (apparently Raging Spirit builds are a popular fresh league builds due to their ease of use, low budget, and effectiveness.)
Unfortunately, like I said, it took me a long time to really accept that the build I wanted to play, may straight up not be viable to progress solo and not struggle at some point.
this person is absolutely RIGHT.
you must grind for your gear.
bt thats stupid!!! why grind when you can buy gear!!
do you have a few chaos orbs? a few alchemy orbs? a few fusings? well, boyo, you can gear up ur char with just a handful of these items!!
whats that, you hate trading?
well, let me introduce you to alternative methods of gear acquisition, AKA, smart grind.
say you are a witch, you want caster stuff.
so you want a staff. you go to chamber of sins level 1 and 2 and start kkilling mobs until they drp the divination card The Dark Mage.
8 of these cards, when given to Tasuni in act 4 or 9, will give you a six linked staff.
then u can roll it like normal and hope u get good rolls.
be SMART.
check the wiki.
you can craft basic gear. NOBODY should stay 30+ level with the same gear. unless its a tabula and a goldrim XD
farm divination cards for specific gear.
levelup ur masters. use meta crafting to craft passable gear till u hit maps and can REALLY start farming items.
Orb of binding: if you have them apply it to ANY white piece of gear and instant 4 link, you can then scour it with orb of scouring then use an alch for a cheap reroll (sort of cheap)
Crafting: make the hideout already, level up the masters to like 5 at least, invite multiple to your hideout specifically Haku and Catrina and Elron. They can add an additional mod of your choosing to mage stuff, armors, and jewlery.
Other than that just look for gear with spell power, life, mana, and resists and your pretty much fine no matter what.
