No, you pay for the curse by the links it uses up as well as the mana to use the skill that applies the hit. You don't pay the mana cost of the curse directly.

You just answered your own question there, a skill gem needs to have the 'curse' tag to be considered a curse.

That should be an obvious "no" then. Neither does contagion have any curse properties, nor does it hit, so it can be used on neither side of the chain.

There are "Cast on ..." Supports. I know that there are "Cast on Crit" and "Cast on beeing hit" or sth like that supports. I think you can buy them in Act 4 or maybe 3 - or in act 5 for sure if u are that far already.
