I think PoE is better because it is one cohesive vision and the devs work hard to polish things that don't feel like they are working out. PoE is about to receive a major content expansion in the release of patch 3.0 so it is a great time to download the game and check it out.
But back to topic I would also recommend POE. While I love the art style of Torchlight and the way classes play, there are much more cool ideas packed into POE.
My opinion is that atm POE is the most fun hack&slash on the market. I think its better than D3, Grim Dawn and even than older gems like Torchlight and Titan Quest.
POE was improving through the years of its development and I hope that the coming patch will improve it further.
We will see at 4th of August. I am waiting. ;)
Path of exile is a whole new approach. Very much open-ended class system (so much that I think POE has no classes) that allows you to change your build drastically without having to change anything on the skill-web.
Personally, I like POE more, but it really REALLY needs a base currency. This barter-based system based on what the game laughably calls "currency" is not my favorite thing. If you hate hate HATE bartering and face-to-face interactions, then be prepared to play POE with slef-found gear and sub-par setups due to not being able to trade.
