Can you replace a jewel socketed into your skill tree?

I just got to my first jewel socket on my skill tree. If I put a gem in there, can I replace it later, or is it permanent?

You can replace, but you do not put a gem, you put a jewel.

Yep, just right click the thing to remove it from the socket, free of charge.
