I was thinking about how to bypass my mana reserve. Would something like this be a free mana spender and trigger the auras for free?

the closest to free you are gonna get are vaal auras+increased duration. You do need to kill stuff so not exactly free..

If you just want to bypass the reservation of an aura just do spell totem + aura. The reservation cost is transformed into mana cost for the cast. You can even make an totem auramancer like that by using ancestral bond + hierophant ascendancy (you're not going to be a 14 aurabot, but you can do some interesting stuff by combining it with traps or summons).

As for curses, cwdt taken + curse works just fine, just use curse effect passives on the tree and quality gems, they will compensate the lack of level. Curse on hit + orb of storms or ball lightning is also pretty simple to use.
