Trading is more of an end game thing anyway. Plus it will greatly slowdown selling bots.
Although it's only currencies being restricted (so you can trade other items with your friend freely, even if you both start out new), and lifts on the whole account (so you won't have the problem on the next character).
As The_Driver said it applies account wide, meaning once you have any character over 25 you can trade even with a character below level 25. Assuming the Essence character in question was not your first character ever, then everything is working as intended.
When is your account registered? (Accounts from before June 2013 aren't restricted)
Was your account migrated from any other realm? (Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, ... I don't know if those have had their restrictions dropped in the process, but that might have been the case)
Did you have any previous characters on that account that reached level 25? (Even deleted ones)
Did you pay with currency items? If so, were they Essences? (Who knows if they count in regards to this...) Was it with scrolls? (see link, they don't count)
What level was your character? (If you overlevel, you could get to level 25 in act 2 quite easily, and overlevel is something many people do on their first character(s) (due to doing too much content/sidequests))
As you remember it "clearly" you should be able remember those things.
