i have used steams voice chat multiple times, never had a problem with quality. although i do prefer my teamspeak server, just because my TS can host more people.

can do the same thing through steam, just go to their chat window and invite to voice chat through the drop down menu. they can than continue to play what their playing and you can play what your playing. can also do group chats, but its been a bit since ive done that so im not sure if its still just invite them and itl pull them into the existing chat or if you have to form a group first, but steam works very well.
