Interesting idea but you just made me realize that this is a made up story that they are telling people because the boat got destroyed. And at the start, of the story he does not say anything like I servived it or my friend did or my dad did or even my grampa did. The only guy he talks about is hatty.

i think that the narrator isnt anyone he is telling us about hes maybe just someone telling a story or it could be one of the members of the S.S Friendship thats my theory
