I think the answer is no for the important question. From what I found out you can ONLY play as the character they give you at a start, so no more playing any of the other generals.

Technically you get to play as your companion... but only for 15 seconds per battle (and not every battle has a companion). So far I've only gotten to play as Guan Yu and Sun Shang Xiang once (15 seconds each).

It's not really free mode, like in other Dynasty warriors where anything goes. It's basically mission select that lets you replay parts of the game. Still same character but u can choose any companion.

Playing a custom character or the other generals was a big part of the appeal of the dynasty/samurai warriors games. Why would they change it to this?
