I would suggest an easier strategy for the Whirling Luan. Way with the peasants to the south is fine but there's a little trick, if you can get through the doors fast enough that makes this one of the three easiest to get: you can challenge Zhao Yun to a duel and trying to cross the bridge forces Zhang Fei to challenge you to an infinite duel. Winning the duels instantly completes the challenge you have 11 minutes to do. Then it's just finishing the level.

Which I would suggest adding the Luan spear and lance as other options for easy level 8's in the Initial Tips section.
