Voluntarily restart at a checkpoint?
Is there a way to voluntarily be defeated so you can go back to an earlier checkpoint?

I encountered a terrible glitch/bug at Hulao where I was in the very last moments of the map, with only one character left to kill, but the AI allies wouldn't actually do it and were somehow losing (albeit slowly) despite morale being fully in the blue. What had happened was that I ran up the tall steps to the top of the castle with a few enemy officers still standing and switched to my partner. When that ran out, Ziluan somehow ended up under the steps and stuck outside the map, unable to die, but also unable to escape no matter how hard I tried. The only option I could find was to withdraw from the battle, but I didn't want to risk it for obvious reasons if you've played it and also because I'd already blown a half hour or somewhere around there on the map already.

Thankfully, the ability to switch to your partner is a timed thing (I didn't know that) and the option eventually showed up as all my efforts to escape the hole proved to be failures and I was able to kill the final officer as my partner, but I didn't see how the ending played out simply because the camera zipped back to Ziluan who was still stuck under the steps.

If there isn't a way to voluntarily be defeated, I think it needs to be put in place. I got lucky and managed to keep everything, but man that sucked.

Agreed. The game doesn't let us manually save progress or restart manually as far as I can tell.

If you withdraw from the menu during a battle it works exactly like it does when you die, so yes you can go back to a checkpoint.

Oh man, really? I'll have to try it out when I don't care about losing the drops or whatever. I was too afraid that it would just boot me back out to the world map and I'd have to start all over.
