where's the personality?
i like the demo and the gameplay at release seems like i'd enjoy it pretty well but the characters all seem soulless and drab compared to the rest of the dynasty warriors series. the main character especially feels boring and dull amplified by the lack of any real customization. i hope they take this games gameplay to other better dynasty warriors games because i want to play but with a cast this dull it really kills my desire to drop 70$ or 90$ plus eventual dlc

I've only tried the demo but i find the voice acting is not as good as the old va. The old va was more dramatic, it made the character much more memorable

I felt this way when they got rid of all the va from Dynasty Warriors 8. I played the demo for 9 and while that game had plenty of other issues with it, the lack of vocal distinction from the characters really detracted from the experience. I know the acting in the previous games wasn't too tier, but for the most part, everyone sounded different (with a few exceptions).

If I played a cutscene from this game with my eyes closed, I'd have no idea who was saying what (unless it was Zhang Fei constantly saying Brother).

The gameplay is fine, but I'm still pretty early in the game to really make a final, definitive call on the game.

I know a silly thing such as missing a VA seems like a trivial reason to dislike a series, but those ain't my Dynasty Warriors I hear on screen. I expect some of the voices to change throughout the years, but not all at once. That really hurt.

it isnt trivial at all. how a game sounds looks and feels is all part of the game and this one is missing all the flamboyant weirdness of its past iterations that made the older titles memorable. older titles almost feel like watching a cheesy overacted kung fu movie but the newer ones feel almost sterile

I agree with the criticism with the voice acting. I played in chinese, japanese and english, and english is really pretty terrible, which is a shame when compared to previous DW.

But I totally disagree with the characters not having depth, quite on the contrary, this is the DW where we see the most depth in the characters. Sure, we got the "silent protagonist", but his story is quite interesting in itself.

We finally get a GREAT Zhang Jiao with some very cool story and cutscenes instead of the meme we had in previous games just shouting "HEAVENS!", we see Sun Jian's motivations with the Imperial Seal, we see a lot of Xun You's insecurities, we see the way Liu Bei's BENEVOLENCE! prevent his progress, we see Sun Quan's insecurities when compared to his brother and father, etc, etc. It's a lot more than previous DW games, who focused much more on combat and barely had any cutscenes (DW9 had a lot of cutscenes but they were absurdely terrible I won't even count them), we see a lot more of Diaochan, etc.

dw has never been about deep stories or well written characters. its always had cheesy sometime hilarious cutscenes and ok to bad overacted voice acting. its what made the series unique beyond just being a generic hack and slash. origins by comparison feels sterilized. the fact that it has a serious story at all takes it out of the dynasty warriors series as it's been and more into normal three kingdoms game which is fine but its just not what made me fall in love with dynasty warriors 3 extreme legends all those years ago or the titles since. all the cool characters costumes and weapons are gone and in its place is a fairly dull OC do not steal romancing everyone. it feels (to me) like watching any movie with mila jovovich in it. they can be ok even good sometimes but they feel more like they're using the name for recognition than actually being a part of the series. i wont deny its a good game but its not what ive come to know or like about dynasty warriors and tbh i really was hoping to like this one enough to buy it proper

Some of them are not too bad and some almost sound a little better. And then you get to Zhang He. Damn. They gutted him. I knew this but that stark comparison really drives it home. And then it's riding the waves the rest of the way.

That was the most hilarious criticism about the game I've read so far

"The game was never about having a good story, good cutscenes or good development, it was goofy and a generic mediocre hack and slash, and now it is too good in all those points, I want that mediocre hack and slash back, terrible cutscenes and even worse voice acting and goofy cutscenes without caring for the story"

Good thing the game is doing so well so Koei/Omega Force won't listen to people like you. They finally made a GOOD GAME, not just a "nice musou game", and that is something they haven't done in over 20 games.

Great improvement to combat, amazing clashes against large forces and use of tactics, use of your own soldiers tactics, a nice personal story with great potential for the future, great character development of characters that were just memes in previous DW, nice skill tree, the return of duels which I missed so much and amazing boss fights (even if there are only two of them), among other things that make the game really great.

at no point did i say the gameplay was bad or that i even hated the game. im not super interested in the whole tribalistic gamer nonsense thing you're doing tbh so you do you dude but the game doesn't NEED to be a generic OC insertion to be a good game.
