I charged Guan Yu's position at the start just to trigger Liu Bei's spawn, then ran back and dealt with them. When Gaun Yu left his position, the dam side of the map seemed to give up on that task and stormed the gate. Beat Liu Bei and Zhang Fei fast enough and Guan Yu will return to the gate before it gets broken down. Don't worry about damaging him while you're fighting Liu Bei. The goal is just to prevent Cao Cao from dying or the gates opening.
There are probably still a few enemy generals left that you need to deal with so they don't kill Cao Cao, but you have infinite time to beat Guan Yu after that.
Bravery potions are really good for any of these speed kill objectives btw, don't overlooked them. Being able to spam your best art>assault over and over again makes these fights go by much faster and of course if you have rage mode use halberd. It gets an enhanced basic moveset that is better than using arts. Just use heavy to gap close and light attack spam in their face. Finish with a valiant steed blitz right as rage is about to run out.
Oh, also never take allies from the stage with you in these missions. Much better to have them impede the enemy. This would have been harder if xiahou dun was my companion and not halting liu bei and zhang fei for a minute or so.
