What actually determines if you can do a duel? I'm a bit confused. They just seem to pop up randomly. I haven't seen one in the last few major battles and it's bumming me out, they're really fun

They are fixed. Only specific characters in specific battles will challenge you to a duel and if they can in that battle they always will assuming you are near them sometime before they die/you beat the level.

Yep, its scripted.

they'll have long line of aura around them, you'll get a massage that tells you to duel.

if you're on a 5 duel mission then i advise lu bu small castle battle in cao cao 4th chapter rout.

I figured that might be the case. It's weird tho, sometimes the prompt shows up and sometimes it doesn't. Like in the big battle with Dong Zhou I know you're supposed to duel Diaochan, but the battle took me a few retrys and sometimes the option to duel her just wouldn't show up :/

I wonder if the currently morale may affect whether you get a duel. Maybe it doesn't give you the option if the duel would be too easy.

Make sure you look at the map, any time there's a pair of swords crossed it means there's a duel available.

I REALLY wish you could challenge people for a duel.

If it makes you feel any better, at the end of each factions campaign in Chapter 5, there will be a, "tournament", mission on the world map that has you duel each major member of that faction.
