Only one playable character?

Hey guys, I'm hoping someone knows if there's only 1 playable character (the antagonist) or not? I've tried finding concrete information on this and I can't.

For context; one of my favorite things about the older DW games, and musou games, is playing as all the different characters, maxing out their stats, and farming their best weapon.

You can play as your partner as well.

Functionally yes, you have the ability to swap to your hero partner but it's more of a temporary ability akin to your rage mode rather than a new character to play. You do have multiple weapon types that seem to all have their own levels, so levelling looks like it'll still be fairly important.

This is my biggest complaint about this game. Been playing DW for like... 20 years or whenever DW2 came out. Let us play as our favorites!!! Zhou Tai, Ma Chao, Zhang Liao, I know it didn't make sense that some of them would be in certain battles (like they were dead or weren't born yet lmao) but it was still fun.

I'm really sad we play as this Japanese popband guy for the entire game.
