However, being a long-time fan of Survival-Horror type of game, Outlast is the most intense and one of the very best Survival-Horror games I've ever experiencd (personally I enjoyed Outlast as a Survival-Horror game a lot more than The Dark Decent - which TDD still good, I often felt in some ways I found more "disturbing" than "scary").
Of course it all depends on how you play. If you play Dark Descent the way it was meant to be played it's terrifying. If you pretty much ignore the playstyle, and run around throwing things at the monsters and trying to dance around them it loses quite a lot of tension.
On the other hand, in Outlast you can watch the crazies wander about and most of the time, if you hide from them, you can watch them poking around, then leave the area. Of course that can cause tension of it's own since they will actually look in lockers, under beds, and so on, and watching them do it makes you hope to god they aren't going to look in your hiding place.
But on the whole, I have to say I've been playing horror games for years and have most if not all of them, even extremely rare ones, and the only one I've never been able to bring myself to finish is Dark Descent (silly as that may be).
Not that I'm putting down Outlast in any way. I think it's great, and it's made me jump a few times, and has had me quite tense on occasion too.
Unfortunately my lappy is not good enough to buy this game right now. I own a ps3 and I heard the game will be free on playstation plus so hopefully I can play it when it releases on PS plus.
Outlast has yet to grab me (pun intended) and I don't know when I'll pick it back up again. I'm disappointed to hear that about Machine for Pigs though. I got it on sale recently and haven't started it yet. If it's not even close to DD then I'm not sure how much I'm going to enjoy it. :-(
But if you like horror games, which I assume you do, then I can highly recommend Outlast.
What you need is a few drinks or whatever to aid in breaking the human psyche and help disconnect from anticipation of a game or scene and allow you to really get into it. Put on some headphones and crank it up, turn the light off, have a scotch on hand and focus.
Outlast has been absolutely fantastic to play even though it did start to lose me towards the end I was instantly drawn back into the story and game on completion. This has been a great gaming experience and if there is one thing out of anything that I can say to help ensure you get what I got, if you work out a mechanical aspect and how to exploit it then you are only killing your own fun.
This is why as stated above make sure you break your human psyche somewhat to achieve maximum enjoyment!
You are correct sir
I have never truly gotten through some frightening horror games without something making it "comfy". Something to break the psyche would probably be very handy

I finished machine for pigs last night and I gotta tell you your going to be dissapointed as its just not scary at all imho nowhere near the briliant DD however it does have a good story to it so that sorta softens the blow :(
I think Penumbra is better than both, Black Plague being my favorite horror game. A lot of Amnesia fans seem to forget it exists.
