Which is scarier, Amnesia the Dark descent or Outlast??
I'm a huge fan of horror. I've heard this game is very creepy. Therefore, which game is scarier, this game or Amnesia the Dark descent ?, which is considered to be, by many, the scariest video game of all time.

Though different in many ways, both The Dark Decent and Outlast are good and scary in their own way (though, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs was a big step-backward to me, didn't hardly feel scary at all, and seemed more like walking through some interactive nonsensical story rather than playing a game).
However, being a long-time fan of Survival-Horror type of game, Outlast is the most intense and one of the very best Survival-Horror games I've ever experiencd (personally I enjoyed Outlast as a Survival-Horror game a lot more than The Dark Decent - which TDD still good, I often felt in some ways I found more "disturbing" than "scary").

I think Amnesia the Dark Descent is scarier than Outlast. Mainly due to the fact that according to the suggested playstyle, you have to hide from the baddies, and NOT LOOK at them. The idea of sitting in a dark corner facing the wall, while god only knows what may either be wandering away, or coming up behind you while you never even know it scares the hell out of me personally.

Of course it all depends on how you play. If you play Dark Descent the way it was meant to be played it's terrifying. If you pretty much ignore the playstyle, and run around throwing things at the monsters and trying to dance around them it loses quite a lot of tension.

On the other hand, in Outlast you can watch the crazies wander about and most of the time, if you hide from them, you can watch them poking around, then leave the area. Of course that can cause tension of it's own since they will actually look in lockers, under beds, and so on, and watching them do it makes you hope to god they aren't going to look in your hiding place.

But on the whole, I have to say I've been playing horror games for years and have most if not all of them, even extremely rare ones, and the only one I've never been able to bring myself to finish is Dark Descent (silly as that may be).

Not that I'm putting down Outlast in any way. I think it's great, and it's made me jump a few times, and has had me quite tense on occasion too.

Nice comments guys, from what I hear Outlast is a great game all around. I really enjoyed Amnesia the dark descent. It scared the living crap out of me because I played it like it was intended by hiding and not trying to throw crates at the creatures. I also own Amnesia, a machine for pigs and haven't played that yet.

Unfortunately my lappy is not good enough to buy this game right now. I own a ps3 and I heard the game will be free on playstation plus so hopefully I can play it when it releases on PS plus.

I thought Amnesia: The Dark Descent was waaay scarier, but I've only been playing Outlast for a few at most, so that might change. It's good, and tense at times, but nothing compares to the scariest stuff in Dark Descent at all. Like the invisible stalker monster in the sewer in DD...now that was downright terrifying.

Outlast has yet to grab me (pun intended) and I don't know when I'll pick it back up again. I'm disappointed to hear that about Machine for Pigs though. I got it on sale recently and haven't started it yet. If it's not even close to DD then I'm not sure how much I'm going to enjoy it. :-(

I beat both games, and I would have to say Outlast is the scarier game. The part with the scientist chasing you, was scary as ♥♥♥♥!

The Dark Descent. I feel like once you understand how Outlast works, it takes away 90% of the scariness while The Dark Descent kept me on edge for almost every single second. I wouldn't say that Outlast is a bad game though. It all depends on what type of horror you enjoy. I don't want to spoil or give away in which ways Outlast is scary, but I just feel that The Dark Descent delivered a more thorough scary game.

But if you like horror games, which I assume you do, then I can highly recommend Outlast.

You have to add in the experience if you truly want to get anything out of any game, this means setting the environment to allow your brain to fully focus on what you are playing. If you are sitting in a room with the light on, door open, external noise such as another TV or someone cooking or talking on the phone then you will break that.

What you need is a few drinks or whatever to aid in breaking the human psyche and help disconnect from anticipation of a game or scene and allow you to really get into it. Put on some headphones and crank it up, turn the light off, have a scotch on hand and focus.

Outlast has been absolutely fantastic to play even though it did start to lose me towards the end I was instantly drawn back into the story and game on completion. This has been a great gaming experience and if there is one thing out of anything that I can say to help ensure you get what I got, if you work out a mechanical aspect and how to exploit it then you are only killing your own fun.

This is why as stated above make sure you break your human psyche somewhat to achieve maximum enjoyment!

@Delushin:
You are correct sir
I have never truly gotten through some frightening horror games without something making it "comfy". Something to break the psyche would probably be very handy

I finished machine for pigs last night and I gotta tell you your going to be dissapointed as its just not scary at all imho nowhere near the briliant DD however it does have a good story to it so that sorta softens the blow :(

Awesome comments guys, this is also a civilized thread without fanboyism which is appreciated.

The difference between Amnesia and Outlast is that Amnesia had a more subtle horror. Dark Descent felt much more paranoid because you had no idea what was going to pop out, while Outlast was very up in your face about it. Made it predictable a lot of times and after killing the crazed scientist, the lurking monsters felt nowhere near as scary in comparison.

I think Penumbra is better than both, Black Plague being my favorite horror game. A lot of Amnesia fans seem to forget it exists.

I have finished Amnesia Dark Descent and have reached reached the female ward in Outlast. I really think that Outlast is much scarier and the gameplay is more fun. The enemies you encounter in Amnesia are usually restricted to a few rooms and you can almost always predict when you're gonna run into a monster. I'm pretty sure that most of the players who think Amnesia was better have yet to finish the game or even reach the doctor.
