Seems to be a common problem with the UEngine. You're using something like the x360ce vibmod to fool the game into thinking it's a 360 controller, right?

Some games might do that with certain controllers (as perhaps not all controllers are fully recognized or compatible), but perhaps try the following:

From the in-game Options, if the "Invert Up Axis" box is un-checked, then check it and Apply and see if it corrects it to how you want.

Or, if that option was already checked, then un-check it, Apply and see if that corrects it for you.

Good luck.

I got the solution to this issue if you still need it! I did it myself and now it works fine with PS2 controller!

How did you manage to fix this? I dont have a PS2 controller (but I hope your solution will help me). All my buttons are mapped to the wrong axis. I tried to use Joy2Key but the ingame controls interfere with the Joy2Key controls. So right now the game is unplayable with my controller.

@humzahumour: you have to go in the folder where you installed Outlast, open it and search for "DefaultInput.ini". When you've found it, open it and search for the non-configurable options line. You will see the axis x/y of the controller which emulate the axis of the mouse, just invert the axis, change x by y and x by y on these 2 lines and then close and save it. Now everything should works fine! Tell me if you need more informations.

Thanks so much I searched through the Outlast folder looking for controls. I found either this file or something similiar, but somehow managed to miss the non-configurable options.

Ahah you're welcome! I'm glad it helped you! :).

I had the same issue and just swapping the x and y from the 2 lines directly below "non-configurable actions" had no effect but I found another fix

5 lines below "configurable actions" i see this:

LookXCommand="Axis aMouseX Speed=+15.0 DeadZone=0.2"
LookYCommand="Axis aMouseY Speed=-12.0 DeadZone=0.2"

swapping X and Y like so mapped the right axes, but they were still inverted

LookXCommand="Axis aMouseY Speed=+15.0 DeadZone=0.2"
LookYCommand="Axis aMouseX Speed=-12.0 DeadZone=0.2"

so I swapped the negative and positive on "Speed" and it made everything normal:

LookXCommand="Axis aMouseY Speed=-15.0 DeadZone=0.2"
LookYCommand="Axis aMouseX Speed=+12.0 DeadZone=0.2"

heres the location for "DefaultInput.ini" btw

"\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Outlast\OLGame\Config\DefaultInput.ini"

and im using a ps2 controller to usb adapter, x360ce not even needed surprisingly

If anyone stumbles across this: Also tried to use a PS2-controller (orig. Dualshock 2) via USB adapter and x360ce on Win7 64 Bit.
Problem here, and in many other games is, that it already has an "xinput1_3.dll" (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Outlast\Binaries\Win64), which is also created by x360ce.
So rename the original one ("xinput1_3_orig" will do) and use x360ce in the above mentioned folder (64 bit version is recommended, i think) and create the usual files. Worked well for me in Whistleblower.
BUT: After changing the xinput-dll my save games were gone. After restoring the original xinput-dll my games were back. So do it when u start a new game, not in the middle as i tried. I will Whistleblower play then via controller (it´s easier to find the buttons in the dark:)

Alternatively: Does somebody know a workaround for the save-game loss?
I could imagine doing the change offline and then loading the save games from the steam cloud may work, but did not try that yet.

Wait how do you get a ps2 controller to work on your pc. Do you buy some thing that allows you to plug your ps2 controller into a usb port? I'm genuinely curious, cause I'd love to try using my ps2 controller as well.

Yes, there are a lot PS2-USB-controller adapters out there. Also 2-to-1 (2 controllers on one USB, but those dont support vibration it seems). They are quite cheap via ebay or A*****.
Worked well for me, since the Dualshock have a generally good quality. Though i have the feeling in the 2-to-1 cases, that sometime signals dont get through, when both press several buttons at a time. (But we still managed to play Octodad :) In the solo case it works without problems.
