why cant it be a flashlight?
I understand we need the nightvision, but the camera makes everything look like crap. It's a bad decision between looking at the game through a crappy filter or not having any way to see. It may be freaky, but its a bit of a letdown to see fuzz all the time.

Night vision is one of the best things in the game. It's a matter of taste, but Miles is a journalist and carries a camera with night vision, a flashlight would absurd and annoying. ;-)

I guess the variants would see you with a flashlight. You can look through the lense of your cam and you won't be noticed.

Too bad we also don't have an M16 - then we could tape the flashlight to it and the game would be over in about 5 minutes.

Fantastic man, thanks to your idea, Outlast would be a s*it. ;-)

Can't be more annoying than the crap filter the camera makes. I don't car about the batteries, I don't care about the nightvision, hell I don't even care about the fact I have to raise and lower the thing. I care about the look of it. It is in the way for me.

Well, you're the only person complaining about night vision. It seems to me a good idea, most scary games use flashlights or lamps, plus the enemies can see you ... I said, would be absurd.

I think that's a bit biased, but its your opinion. I don't know if you've ever played penumbra, but that game was a lot like this and I much preferred the flashlight route.

Yeah, but Red Barrels sought to make a unique game, and they got. There isn't scary game where the light source is a night vision camera for that reason I see right. Miles is a journalist, and carries a camera with night vision, it would be absurd to bring a flashlight.

PD: Yes, I played Penumbra, but I say the same, if you want a flashlight, play Slender The Arrival, but Outlast has unique things.

Guess what. Cameras have lights mounted on them. So saying that just because its a camera means it can't have a flashlight is wrong.

I repeat, there are many flashlights in the most scary games. Outlast is correct.

And that's biased. On the flip side, outlast is wrong BECAUSE it doesn't have a flashlight.
The only other game I saw with a infared camera was [REC] Shutter, while most horror games use flashlights. Good idea creatively wise.
Star_Inferno Apr 14, 2014 @ 11:52pm
Wouldn't it be a bit boring if all horror games use flashlights as a lightsource? Amnesia uses lanterns, all slender games uses flashlights, penumbra uses glowsticks...A camera fits a reporter more than a simple flashlight and the camera used in Outlast has a infarot sensor so you can see in the dark.

What if their was a "Flashlight mode" for beating the game which gives you a challenge? >:)

I reckon it would have been interesting to have weapons in Outlast as collectables (just like the batteries), you could get one-time use items like a knife or something which could counter an enemy attack and stun them long enough for you to run off and hide, you wouldn't get it back though, the protagonist would stab the enemy, the enemy would react to the attack, pull it out and toss it away, then persue you again.
