Let me tell you this:
I never finished Amnesia because I got waaaay to freaked out at certain points in the game.
is this game of the same value of creepyness? (If that is even a word...)
I'd say that Outlast is at least three times as creepy as Amnesia was. I won't spoil the game for you, but I will say that there is a lot of gore and profanity. The jumpscares aren't often, but when they do happen; they'll give you a huge adrenaline rush. There are also plenty of creepy parts in this game that would definitely make a tough grown man get creeped out. Amnesia's creepy parts revolved around one main event, right? Outlast has creepy parts that are spaced out all throughout the game. The purpose of Outlast is to disturb the viewer, and it definitely does its job.
You may like this game if you buy it, i don't know. But since you posted in this thread I may as well share my opinion.
I believe the thing that makes Amnesia a good horror game for people is that it spaces out the scary/creepy/horror aspect a bit by implementing puzzles or allowing you to roam around quite a bit. you have to explore to progress. This way the creepy monsters don't get old very fast.
Unfortunately in Outlast you follow a pretty linear and straight forward path to progress through the game and it continually exposes you to the same type of scares over and over that starts to feel very repetitive after only an hour or less.
I don't think this game is worth buying but a lot of people seem to disagree with me.
As I said, you might enjoy it.
Everything you read in these threads is just peoples opinions so the only way to find out if it's worth playing is to play it for yourself.
you probably shat yourself when watching the chitty paranormal movies
Anyways, Im gonna buy the game right now. 75% off of one of these gems is too hard to pass it down.
Plus I don't agree with your opinion in general when it comes to the question of what makes something Scary, as it is all about personal experience depending on how well you engage with the game.
Btw I'm not "edgy or a teenager", I'm in my 50's. Nevertheless, as i said further back in this thread, I believe it's all down to an individuals immersion into the game that will ensure they get the best the developer wanted to portray.
I wasn't directing that at you. That was meant more for people like (@), KFORCE-K4, and vagabond for being pricks.
That's alright mate I didn't take it personally. I just wanted to convey that I really think that when it comes to modern games and how we as gamers can become engrossed in them is not neccessarily to do with our ages, but how we can engage with the games narrative.
I do agree there can be a great deal of nit picking on forums with younger fans tearing shreds out of each other about how good a game is or isn't, but I truly believe much of that is down to how people immerse themselves within the game.
I remember watching the original exorcist back in the early 80's when I was in my 20's and although it was released some years beforehand it was still seen as a very "Scary" film. Me a mate and our Girlfriends watched the film and I was spooked by it (really spooked), my mate not so much and the girls just thought it was funny. My point is, back then I was immersed in the film and no doubt it had the desired effect, the girls though just couldn't see what the fuss was about - very much in the same vein as some have conveyed about Outlast in this forum debate.
But Hell no ...this is very boring....
3-5 Jumpscares who doesent scary me at all
Trail and error...the and hide and seek.....lame
I tried to get immersed to the game, I played lights out, volume etc. even while a storm was raging outside. But in the end, it couldn't help. It pretty much ruined the feeling, when all those time to time jump scares were so predictable, honestly after playing several horror games in my throughout my gaming history, Outlast pretty much every typical jump scare and so called "unexpected turn of events" that are in the book.
It could made the game better, if the gameplay wouldn't be so linear tunnel run like. And to stack up the things, The utterly annoying "turn these two things in here and here so you can activate the trigger there, so you can advance to the place over there" It was in place fore few times, but when it occurred in every area, it got old and chew the interest out.
Also the AI evasion had much to improve later on in the game, because in my opinion in every situation that i came up against were based on the idea of "wait until he passes by and move on" and therefore it became so tiresome, to sit around in a perfectly convenient hiding spot near you and wait the psycho just passes by so you can continue.
But Outlast being scary? For me, no. It was too predictable and too repetitive. It also left "creepy" behind when it dropped into the detention areas, which basically made the part of my brain that gives me the cold shivers shut off. That's the part that says "this place looks ok, but feels wrong somehow." For me, that's the best type of "scary" in a game, and Outlast tossed it out the window early on, in favor of a blatantly and aggressively dangerous atmosphere.
That's why I'm not labeling games like Outlast, Dead Space, etc as "scary." They may be fun or good games, but they stop being scary when they're just going "BOO" as loudly as possible.
Good effort for survival horror, graphic plus, and using camera for seeing in in the dark and also taking notes and so on was a good idea in my opinion and could have gone onwards for a good while, if justly taken advantage of.
sorry for the possible type-o's, English isn't my native language.
Depends on who's playing it, doesnt it? :P
