FIXED: Does not launch on 64-bit machine
I'm running on a Windows 7, 64-bit PC. When I attempt to launch the game through Steam, a black box appears briefly, disappears, and then nothing happens.

I have attempted to run OutlastLauncher.exe from steamapps, but that results in the error "The aaplication was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)." Attempting to start the 32-bit version from the binaries results in the same black-box problem originally described.

To address the 0xc000007b issue, I have:
a) reinstalled the C++ redistributables
b) reinstalled DirectX
c) restarted the computer with all the latest updates
d) ran a CHKDSK
e) shook my fists at the PC gods
f) verified the game cache
g) attempted running the game as administrator

Nevertheless, I still get the same error when attempting to start the game from OutlastLauncher.exe. I believe this error is specific to Outlast, because none of my other installed games have this issue.

Any known solutions?

EDIT: Scarsick's link did the trick! Typing in -32 into the launch properties worked. I'm not sure why that worked when directly clicking on the 32 bit game didn't, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Thanks, Scarsick!

Have you tried running the exe file as Administrator?? Maybe even try running Steam too as Admin.

Thank you, this simple solution worked great.

There is usally a 32 bit mode and 64bit mode for new games now...Not all. Even some not so new ones ie: Crysis (2007)..You can set it in set launch options I believe in the game properties from your steam library...just type in -32..this works for other games when trying to launch in 32bit...

Not fixed. Now instead of not launching the game hangs then hits you with a "Outlast has stopped working" window. Just traded one problem for another.
