Since the targets are roughly mansized, and the ranges are marked, you can quickly learn how to figure out ranges and shots.
Here is a rough rule of thumb that has served me well in more than one game that simulates ranges. (Arma and Battlefield)
Using a 10x scope (Most in SE3 are 4-6x, so keep that in mind) if a man's head is in the center, and his lower leg/feet are at the bottom of the scope, he is 100 meters/yards away. If his head is at the center, and his feet are halfway down the bottom half of the scope, he is 200 meters away.
Using 5x as the average in sniper elite, if a man's head is at the center of the scope, and his feet are only a quater of the way down the bottom half of the scope, he is about 200 meters. This method has worked very well for me so far, and is very quick to use.
Quick Reference table 5x (man's head at center, length of body/radius of scope)
1/1 - 50m
1/2 - 100m
1/4 - 200m
1/6 - 300m
1/8 - 400m
If you have a 4x scope, aim a little lower, 6x, aim a little higher
