I know most people play Human Revolution and nothing else but I heard the story with the fist one and the DLC was amazing.
Haven't played the Fall, so no comment on that bit.
And although I won't deny I think HR is the best of all the Deus Ex games, I'd recommend at least giving the first a spin.
By modern control standards it's near a freaking flight-sim, but all that is configurable to something at least resembling user-friendly.
But still, especilly for how old #1 is it's near mindboggling how much stuff Ion Storm did back then that many modern games don't even get close to pulling off fourteen years later.
Unless you really need a Deus Ex fix, I'd skip #2 though. It's THE example for many still about how multi-platform games are far, far worse than 'pure PC games.'
Ugly graphics that looks like plastic. Every level feels like a barn at best, and a closet at worst. Boring and useless augmentations. A stupid and near insulting story...
Heck, the game Project: Snowblind was a better freakin' sequal to the original, and that started as a multiplayer spin-off that wasn't even meant to HAVE a single player to start with.
So just HR. Okay then
It's a horrible port and is nowhere near Human Revolution standards.
I belive it continues the story of the book, though.
Might be worth it for that, if your a 'Icarus Effect' fan.
DE1: about 7 or 8 times xD
DE2: 2 times (release date and recently)
DEHR: 3 times
DETF: once xD
I also wrote some reviews about these games & I would say: play at least DEHR and DE1.
You can even play DEHR first since Deus Ex 1 can be seen as a sequel (meca-augs -> nano-augs) and graphics are much more better (more recent game). Both of them are great games & there are patches that slightly increase graphics for DE1 :)
Well I suggest you to play Human Revolution — The Conspiracy — Invicible War order, not because of a timeline but because this order is like a cinema: Low start, then conclusion, then the ending part.
I think the tension of DE1 is like 8/10, of DE2IW is 4/10 and the HR is 6/10. Hope ill help someone with this comment.
Otherwise my preferred method is to enjoy the games in order of release. And play all of them. :)
I didn't consider it a good looking game even back when it first released, so now it may well leave a lot to be desired.
However, it was an incredible experience gameplay wise and likely still is if you can get past the graphics, though in fairness I haven't played it since 2001 to judge. However, it was a truly defining game of the time period, up there with Half Life and Ocarina of Time in terms of innovation and impact.
Invisible War paled in comparrison, being designed to work on the original Xbox first and foremost, so it was a watered down experience and one of the first PC games I remember being deliberately gimped so it would work on a console too.
DX HR is a worthy addition to the series and a great game for sure, though I feel the level design and pacing in some areas leaves a bit to be desired and again the fairly simple 'corridor and large room' design was likely due to the Xbox 360 and PS3's limitations.
Although I own The Fall too I haven't tried it yet so can't comment.
All in all I'd still say that for the time they were released, Deus EX 1 is by far the best of the series, and the only one that was a true bespoke PC game, all the others were in some way limited by being console ports, with HR managing to still be a very good game despite that.
