Just make sure to sell off or drop excess stuff you don't need, and remember some areas you won't be back to so don't leave anything behind you might want. You don't need to carry around a zillion items you will find more stuff later. I personally just keep emp grenades they are very handy, i sell off the other explosive items and grenades.
You can upgrade your augments carry capacity so you can carry more gear, i suggest doing this early, along with hacking (very important).
My usual is sniper/tranq/combat rifles, but i've went with pistol/revolver runs, later picking up lasers which are great. Since i usually do stealth runs thats even more reason not to need weapons, but a fully upgraded assault rifle is helpful in a few areas that you need to actually fight (boss battles, etc).
I never found grenades or explosives worthwhile because human foes you can just shoot, and robots you can use emps, why lug around explosive grenades, gas grenades, concussion grenades, and the like. Your gun can sub for all those.
Still, you're absolutely right. It's a waste of space to carry more than 3 weapons, since it's unlikely you'll need more for your particular play style. For stealth playthroughs, I carry a silenced pistol for creating distractions and boss fights (don't underestimate armor-piercing), a stun gun for cameras, and a laser rifle for bots inside their stations. For run & gun gameplay, I would imagine a combat rifle/machine pistol & shotgun would be sufficient for most of the game.
When you go in your augments are nullified to "factory zero", all gone. Your items are removed. In the early part of the DLC you'll find a storage area where your weapons are, and some praxis kits so you can get some early augments going. So your main weapons you can bring into the DLC and use.
Once the DLC is finished, there are some boxes waiting for you that have the rest of your gear (ammo, etc), so you can start to sort out what items you want to continue the game with. You'll have all the stuff you collected during the DLC and what you had before, so there will be a ton of junk you have to leave behind due to lack of room.
You'll also get some praxis kits in the final box which you can augment yourself back up to the level you were before you entered the DLC. You won't keep both your augments before and during the DLC, they didn't make the DLC that way. If you go in with 50 augments, you will finish up with 50 augments, even if you earned enough experience and praxis kits in the DLC to max out.
Mostly the DLC is for fun, they incorporated it into the regular game pretty well, but not exactly how they were suppose to do, they didn't fix the game after that so there weren't any updates to correct any such problems, just don't expect to be augmented like crazy afterwards, your progress in the dlc won't count towards your praxis level really.
NOTE: just an extra, my suggestion for early augments in the DLC are 2 for legs (jumping), levels 1-3 hacking (you won't need levels 4-5 until later), and what ever is left into carry. Of course get your major augments first (punching through walls, lifting, cloaking, etc). You'll have to rebuild yourself from scratch again, but its not to bad.
NOTE: In the DLC when you finish any foes left in the game disappear, so you can kill/takedown everyone you want, and you are cut off from the detention levels but the rest of the levels are accessable if you want to backtrack and get stuff. What I like to do is not to hack/get items that i do not need, do a faster run through the DLC taking out all the foes and finishing it, then after you get all your gear back at the end heading back and clearing, looting and hacking. This way i can actually get some more praxis points by saving stuff until after the DLC is over, getting my original praxis points, then leveling up more on all the doors, hacking, praxis kits i left behind. Or you can read posts about just modding your game to give yourself all the praxis the game steals from you once you finish. Your choice.
Like my last game i went in 10 praxis short of maxing out, finished and was still 10 short on maxing out, then went back and hacked/praxis and got 3-4 extra praxis doing the stuff I skipped. I suggest the first time playing the DLC to just play it how you like. You probably have a save file from before, if you want to re-play and do it different you can.
