Finally gave up and restarted in custom mode.
After 10 hours in my first "default" playthrough, I'd finally had enough and restarted in custom mode, and WOW the experience is SO MUCH BETTER.
In default mode, it's like you're on a boat in the middle of the ocean that's constantly sinking. So I removed the "constantly sinking" part.
Lowered debris damage, changed fuel to premium (more efficient), lowered repair costs, and most importantly lowered power cell drain, consumable usage, and oxygen drain. In default difficulty, you hit a tiny pebble at 40mph, and it nearly totals your truck. Then it's $3k to fix, which is insane when you're already spending all your time barely scrapping by constantly replacing power cells and air filters. I was replacing the grav gen power cell every 40 minutes and none of the truck upgrades remedy that. So I turned off the grav gen, and threw everything in my airlock, which eventually got really annoying to manage. Finally, I realized that I'm running around with all lights off, almost everything that can be off was off, and I'm like, wth am I doing?

So yeah, I lowered settings for all the "♥♥♥♥ you" mechanics, and kept payouts/bonuses the same so as not to speed up progression, and now the game feels exactly as it should!

After reading all the feedback before my first fly I started the game in custom mode from the beginning.

Well yes... this is what you're supposed to do when a game is too hard for you, you turn the difficulty down.

Can we leave the elitest attitude out of the equation? This isn't a difficulty issue, it's a tedium issue. If you enjoy repetitive tedium, good for you. Most don't and this game goes more than a little too hard on it on "default". I daren't imagine how bad it gets on the higher settings.

I did the same, after 1 hour I restart in custom mode and I enjoy it much more. Not only difficulty down, I just wanted to drive more and not do maintenance every 5 mn... it depends on how you want to play, and the customization of the parameters is a great thing.

Exactly! I usually like a challenge, so I actually played a couple hours in hardcore mode right on release. So I after going back and changing to default mode, I nearly burnt myself out on all the tedium. Should've waited to see what people were saying and started in custom mode like many others! Love the game now that I'm not having to change consumables every 10-20 minutes!

Absolutely! I hope they add the ability to change game settings while in game!

This.

Aside from that, I greatly applaud the devs for including such extended difficulty modifyer settings from the start.
Personally, I'm loving the standard difficulty- I seem to share the dev's vision. For me, they've got that difficulty JUST right. Once you get a bit further in, with a few upgrades under your belt, it becomes considerably easier and more comfortable. I'd get bored if nothing would break or run out while I'm flying through space. Prepping before a long trip is part of the fun :D
No leaks yet, did have a few AI drive into me, and had a few debris impacts.
bloody love the maps with the solar flares.
Not a fan of the current just-in-time delivery system though.

I restarted a custom game too, with low consuption etc.
But since I found the mechanic and upgraded my truck, it feels too easy now.
Maybe just bite your teeth and play through the first like 3 hours until you can get some upgrades.
I will start a new save tomorrow on recommended and try it myself.

I restarted my game various times to tweak settings, but the first time was because of this. I ended up taking everything on the right, then working my way back over to the left from there. Never getting the Just in Time stuff. I will eventually, when I feel like dealing with it, but for now it's SO much nicer not having to worry about which Cargo I grab and either getting stuck sitting because my timing was slightly off, or needing to do an extra hop away and back to speed up time and miss my window.

Why can I not use the sleeper cab to pass the 20 minutes I have to faff around for to finish the delivery.

You guys only see it as tedious because you're bad at managing the consumption of things. You leave all your lights on, you have batteries slotted into every single system, you leave your heater blowing all the time.

If any are interested in improving, check out my Hardcore series! Episode 3 just released! Here's episode 1.

Didn't really enjoy the game until I started doing Custom. It's a nice way to get use to controls and navigation.

I went straight for the DRIVER difficulty because I want a space truck simulator not a frustration sh!t management simulator. If I wanted that Id buy back the refunded pacific drive

the recommended difficulty in this game isn't recommended.... : /

I am 6 hours into my run, got a few holes in my hull i couldn't patch up because the charge is so awfully slow.......

so i died to lack of oxygen. 4k dollars down the drain. then i went to repair my hull. 3k dollars down the drain.

it felt like i was Barely covering the cost of things so far and now that???????
