On the other hand you have lots of SRPG with similar combat and character development. Expeditions: Conquistador (another kickstarter game) or King's Bounty (all of them) are good examples.
It really depends on what part of the game struck you. The events that pop up along your journey are (as Andresito mentions) very similar to King of Dragon Pass (available on iOS or from GOG.com). I highly recommend playing that one. Very highly.
For the PC currently on Steam:
The Banner Saga of course
Blackguards
Shadowrun Returns
XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within
Expeditions: Conquistador
Eador
Fallen Enchantress (many)
Fantasy Wars
King's Bounty (many)
Civ V and similar games
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny remake
Avadon series
Bionic Dues
Space Hulk
Eschalon Series
Avernum Series
Geneforge
Nethergate
Xenonauts
Early Access games on Steam:
Wasteland 2
Divinity Original Sin
Legends of Eisenwald
Dead State
The Age of Decadence
UnderRail
Coming Soon to Steam:
Warlock 2
The Battles of King Arthur
For the PC not on Steam (GoG or similar):
Temple of Elemental Evil
Jagged Alliance series
Heroes of Might and Magic series
Age of Wonders series
Planescape Torment
Arcanum
Ultima series
Wasteland
Wizardry series
Fallout series (especially tactics, not the new FPS versions)
If you don't mind pausing a lot and issuing commands:
Baldurs Gate series
Neverwinter Nights series
Icewind Dale series
Dragon Age series
Some argue Collectable Card Games are turn based strategy
Some argue 4x games like master of orion are turn based as well.
I'll definately check some of the games you guys recommended.

Because people are forcetricked, just like a donkey chasing after the carrot. Every higher level is designed in such a way that you can barely finish it and if you do you have to leave something valuable behind unless you grab your wallet. Its not a game but can almost be defined as a psychological scam.
Candy Crush has got nothing to do with fun, its just enslaving people.
Theres also Record of Agarest War, which is a japanese srpg. Its not for everyone. Try before you buy.
Another game Durgine missed is Silent Storm. Its brilliant, if a bit old. But it has WW2 weaponry, not axes and swords, if that is important for you.
But yes, to feel the full glory of character based Turn Based Strategy, you need to get a Japanese Console, be it playstation (PSP / PS2 has most I would say), or a 3DS (which can also play all DS games).
There are some good ones on iOS also. Final Fantasy Tactics, Crimson: Steam Pirates, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunaga's Ambition, and my personal favorites, both under-appreciated indie games - The War Of Eustrath and Ravenmark.
