[Linux] Fix Performance Issues with Beta Branch
Linux players experiencing issues with the game (for example lag or fps/performance drops) should try activating the linuxfix beta branch. It has proven to help a lot!

This might also apply to the SteamOS version of the game.

Here's how to do this. In your Steam Library:
  • Right-click on "The Banner Saga" > Select "Properties"
  • Go to "BETAS" tab > Opt into the "linuxfix" branch, through the drop-down menu
  • Wait for game files to be updated; maybe restart Steam client

NOTE: I am not on Linux myself, so I can't provide any more details at this time. I just made this thread and pinned it following Linux-community's suggestion, for future players' reference. I will try to get the devs to look at this post and maybe provide more details.

UPDATE (9 Nov 2015): Italian localization is not officially supported in the linuxfix branch, however there is workaround to get it working, albeit in an early (unpolished) state:

Yep - if anyone is having issues, please try going the beta branch and checking out the build there!

Hello,
just installed The Banner Saga on Linux (openSUSE 12.3 64bit, AMD Phenom II X4 955, Nvidia 760GTX with 352.41) without beta branch. Did have some heavy lags and fps where going down to 25).
With the beta branch I get steady 60fps and no lags.
Thank you. And now I have to play The Banner Saga.

The Linux Beta patch fixed the stuttering gameplay during battles.
System: Debian Jessie with R9 290 and MESA Drivers.

Yeah, it fixes the battles and most other scenes, but still think the launch menu could do with a little work.

Hi, the beta wooks fine. But why there isn't the ITALIAN language in the beta fix ???

Oops... :steamfacepalm: Let me pinpoint this to the devs.

UPDATE: It seems that some of latest additions included in the default branch have not been passed to the linuxfix brach. So, no Italian in the linuxfix for the moment. Don't ask me "When?", because the priority now for Stoic is TBS1 ports for XBox & PS and TBS2 release...

I resolved the problem with a workaround: adding the line "locale.it=it" in the file tbs_config.ini

Kudos! I assume that if the localization files are there (e.g. downloaded when not in the linuxfix beta branch), that would do it. I'm gonna put this info in the top post; thanks again.

Thanks for the fix. It works for me. it was completely unplayable in the normal branch. Keep up the great work!

Works well! Thx for the FIX!

The linuxfix makes the game playable. But screenshots look garbled. Please work this into the release version so other Linux users don't need to experience the 1 FPS version.

I'd like to chime in and say that this beta branch seems to fix every problem I was experiencing with the game.

In the normal build, the game was entirely unplayable. I have a pretty solid machine, but I was only getting 1-2 FPS in battles and many sprites would remain entirely frozen (ie: an enemy would be killed, but his sprite would remain standing). With this beta branch, everything is running very smoothly.

distro: Arch Linux x86_64
kernel: 4.2.5-1
window manager: AwesomeWM
ram: 32124 MiB
proc: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690 CPU @ 3.50GHz
gpu: GeForce GTX 760

I can confirm that the 'linuxfix' branch is what was needed to make the game playable on my Steam Machine. Thanks! Any ETA on when the game will work out of the box (i.e. without needing to go hunting down this solution) for Steam Machine users?

Can't say. Stoic currently have TBS2 and PS4/XB TBS1 ports higher on their priorities for the following months. Setting the linuxfix branch as the "default" branch doesn't seem such a big thing, but there must be some reason they're not doing it =/

Hi, I'm playing in the beta and found a major bug.

When I use Oddleif ability Rain of Arrows, the enemie trigger the ability effect but keep walking, stop at the end of the animation, take damage and become stuck, don't attack or end its turn... it's impossible to finish the combat.

The bug occurs every time I used Rain of Arrows ability. Some minor bugs happend too, like an enemie killed still on foot after death...

I'm playing it on Hard difficult.
