Animation style
I remember watching mvoies as a kid that had an animation style just like this game, but I don't remember what they were called.

Does anyone know the names of movies that look like this or what the style is called?

Stoic's art director, Arnie Jorgensen, said he drew inspiration for TBS's style from Disney's Sleeping Beauty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imoPisoDyE8 Notice how the "sprites" (totally Disney-like) and the "background" (courtesy of Eyvind Earle) are completely different styles, but blend well together creating this trademark style.

True, but that Disney is much closer to the mark! Interestingly, I came across this "Introduction" to the LoTR movie you mentioned:

And it seems that Stoic copied that style (i.e. shadows behind a red banner) in their TBS2 trailer! :devilskiss:

I would love it if Stoic made a game using Ralph Bakshi's style. A Fire & Ice or Wizards tactical or action RPG would be epic

When I first played Banner Saga the art style actually reminded me of The Last Unicorn. They have similarities, but The Last Unicorn was animated by Topcraft (predecessor to Studio Ghibli).
The animation technique is called rotoscoping, which is what they used in the animated LoTR film. The landscape art definitely reminds me of Disney's Sleeping Beauty and they clearly used that as inspiration. Rotoscoping is where they basically paint/draw over live-action footage frame by frame, which can add a level of realism and detail, but it can also be super creepy looking. :) Anyway, I totally agree to all of the above comments. The art style is fantastic and reminds me of so many great animated classics.
