Pausing the CrowdIn project

I didn't see the crowdsourced translations as a huge issue. Although I'm sure that a professional translator/localizer would do the best job.
I see where people are coming from but I also see how the developers could imagine this as a fun way to get the community involved. Nobody is making you do it, and if even like 5% of people who play the game vote on a translation of a joker card; I imagine it'll be done in a fraction of the time. I'll have faith in Localthunk, I believe if they truly were only focused of cost savings they would've gone the AI route

There's nothing wrong with that approach in general. It's in fact how I got into this industry in the first place.

However, you can't deny that paid work should (that's a big should, because it's not always the case, sadly) typically provide better quality and I think many will support the notion that if they paid for a game they want to play in their native language, they expect quality translations (and QA). There are games using fan translation with basically no QA following up on that.

And if they see a game making thousands or even millions of money, they would put even stronger emphasis on this quality expectation. It's a bit like you're being an investor by buying a game (even though there's no legal grounds for this made-up association).

There's a big difference between playing with a downloaded patch of fan translations versus an official translation that's on fan translation level (and I'm not trying to dunk on any fan/community translations here, some are really excellent and I've played a few myself, too).

For example, whenever I see some new project featuring a huge list of languages in their language selection, I always suggest to them to not provide any translations or just 1 or 2 they have some source to vet for the quality (like friends, family, or team members). Once they made some money, spend some of that money to expand the selection, etc.

I understand this perspective, and I really do respect all the translators who have responded, but I think there are two things being conflated, here:

1. Translators should be paid for their labor.

2. Freeloading users want things for free.

These two are connected, only because localisation is usually given for free, to the end-user.

So, can we PLEASE discuss this part of the situation, as I've been wanting to do??? Because I keep addressing that point, and it has BARELY been responded to.

Basically, I want these whiners to PAY for what they are demanding. I sincerely doubt that they're sooooooooooooo concerned with the welfare of these professional translators.

I think it's just a matter of "ME, ME, ME! ME WANTY FREE STUFF!"

Why is that okay? Why are they being encouraged to act that way? Why are they being praised for bullying the developer into spending money for no return?

Note that none of them saying "I want the translators to be paid AND I AM READY TO CHIP IN MY FAIR SHARE OF THAT PAYMENT.

How come NOBODY has said that?

I think they want free stuff for themselves and that's non-negotiable, but they have also picked up the vague notion that translators shouldn't work for free.

Even when we're talking about a one-person studio, they see the developer as the evil, moustache-twirling factory owner and the translators as poor, pitiable workers.

For all they know, the developer of Balatro was the victim of one of the game industry layoff waves, and that's why he started making Balatro, in the first place. As a hail-mary attempt to stay in the industry, rather than having to go do something else.

Let's assume that's the case, for the sake of argument. While, everyone here (myself included) would have viewed an underpaid and subsequently laid-off developer as the victim, he's apparently INSTANTLY re-labeled as the evil boss.

Ya know, even though he's only his own boss.

I can't help but see this as a situation where tiny developers who don't deserve to be bullied are the only ones who CAN be bullied. And that's why they get targeted by supposedly well-meaning crap like this.

We all know the huge companies like EA can't ever be persuaded to treat either their employees or users like human beings, and huge corporations won't ever be forced to pay their fair share in taxes again.

I think people know the big guys are untouchable, so they paint a target on the LITTLE guys instead and bully them, because they can succeed when they do that.

I can't even be bothered to read the rest of the thread but YOU are the only one "screaming" in this thread and making it ME ME ME ME. You were wrong from the start and even after being called out from multiple translators you still went at it. I just want you to know that you are the worst kind of person and everyone else in this thread has had to watch you unravel.

Or... here me out... You pay people to translate it out of the millions you've earned from it... And the money you will earn from it. Rather than asking people to do free work for your paid project. It's literally a profession.

Standard capitalist procedure, try to get free labour from people who paid for your product then act dumb when you get called out. I love the game, but I've lost respect for you.
But then again, how better to defeat capitalism than eliminating labour and just work instead? What if genuine love for the game results in players wishing to give something back to the community? I would do my bit if the game were solely in English and played by 200 people a day...

If I had hands, I would have clapped for you!
If you could make other translations an optional download, that would be great. If all games did that, I swear I'd have like 500GB extra space.
i thunk i love you even more now
i can help you with Russian, fellas

Marriage ruins my Balatro.
why are you crowdsourcing translation?
>devs making a way so volunteers can help translate the game to many languages
>clowns making it about themselfes that would not do ♥♥♥♥ for the community/the game people love, complaining about "pay me for my work"
>people counting devs money "you're already made a lot of money, just spend it to hire dozens of translators team, you're already millioners"
>devs caved in to vocal majority ignoring people that wanted to help and closing public translation project
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ show, you wouldn't do ♥♥♥♥ to help anyone but yourself, why the ♥♥♥♥ do you prevent others to volunteer and counting devs money
