black deck description is weird

it says -1 hand per turn which might make you think that you lose one hand permanently every round, but its actually just one less hand to play with.
-1 hand for a free joker slot is kinda worth it imo, if you cant win with 3 hands your build is dog to begin with.

I hate the black deck. I've beat almost all the other decks, many of them on first or second try, but I just keep losing on the black deck. The problem is getting going because you have less hands early which means less money each round and less ability to survive. -1 hand is a lot worse than it sounds.

Exactly this. The black deck may be the worst deck in the game. I absolutely hate it and can't make it work for the very reason you described. I made it to ante 7 and thought I was home free, until a 0 discards boss blind cheated me.

With Black deck I simply restart if the first two or three Antes didn't go well. Its a great mid to late game deck once there are enough jokers to start the momentum. The extra slot means one extra eco joker, I tried few runs and black deck always seem to have better eco and combos. But as you said, the first two or three Antes are much harder compared with other decks, Black deck requires way more luck or rng to actually work.

This is really the long and short of it. Your first hand needs to win the small blind and your first shop needs to give you SOME momentum. After that, you need to win the next few rounds in 1-2 hands and get an econ option, or you might as well restart.

Black deck is definitely a tough one, finally won a run today with it with a five of a kind aces build. Chopped the deck down with hanging man and spectral packs for enhanced aces, death for more aces and queens, larger hand size voucher, discard until got five + queens in hand, then scholar, dusk, acrobat, and shoot the moon.

-1 hand is an awful drawback until you have enough momentum to clear blinds in one hand, and even then you're at the mercy of certain boss blinds. By the time it's online, that +1 joker slot is not guaranteed to give more points over a round than an extra hand. It also means less econ. It's a cool bonus, but black is easily the weakest deck on average.

The black deck is my favorite of the 5 basic ones because it's so lategame oriented while also forcing you to make up for its shortcomings right off the bat. Focus on building up more hands as your main score source. Buy things like banana, ice cream, and popcorn the second you see them. Once you stabilize, you can get more permanent jokers and become a lategame monster.

Green deck is my least favorite of the 5 basic decks because I rely so heavily on interest and I'm very liberal with discards...

I suggest trying it again sometime. I won with It tonight after bailing on a couple of runs early. I was scraping by until ante 6 and kept thinking the rib was about to end at any moment. It was incredibly rewarding to claw my way through until I was finally able to turn the corner.
