On launch, I get a black screen for ages. The game eventually loads but the screen is obscured by a large black shape (I can't even describe it, other than it looks like a smooth edge) obscuring over half the screen. Strange, for a high end Android phone.

Did you rename apktool to remove the version number like he says in the video

You'll need to post the error you're getting whenever you try to run the command. Make sure you renamed the apktool.jar to remove the version number, and make sure you have Java installed.

Disable CRT Filters when using APK maker.

Can confirm. I had to disable the CRT filters to get it fully working on my Pixel 8. Some of the animations are kinda warped, but the core gameplay looks to be fully functional.
