Shortcut Joker doesn't stack with itself?
I was under the impression that the game knew what a straight was. So, when I copied Shortcut and had two of them, I thought that straights made with a gap of one rank could now be made with a gap of one rank. Apparently not. Where is the flaw in my logic here? Why doesn't the funny joker combo work?

Because it doesn't say it increases the maximum amount of gap in rank by one, it allows gaps of one. Doing that twice doesn't make it gaps of two.
Same difference between a button that sets your score to 1, versus a button that adds one to your score. The latter allows you to play cookie clicker, the former doesn't.
I'd assume shortcut applies a new game rule of straights can be made with gaps of 1 instead of shortcut giving some sort of stat that allows what it does, if that makes any sense. An analogy would be like if a game had an item that said "all damage is set to double the original value." Even with two of them it wouldn't increase the damage output because it's just making a new rule.

The same analogy applies here. Shortcut basically tells the game to accept Straight when there's a gap of 1 between cards, 2 Shortcuts does the same work so no gap of 2. Same applies to Four Finger, 2 of them still does the same job of telling the game to recognize Flush / Straight with 4 cards.
