Starting to get real tired not getting any decent jokers...
I swear, ever since hitting black steak (on blue now) the shop just... does not cooperate at all. The amount of times I've lost rounds on ante 2 or 3 because I don't see a single joker that does something for scoring is so damn frustrating! I keep getting a ton of jokers for utility like 8 ball or credit card, and if I do manage to get a joker that gives points, it's usually something for chips or just adds +4 mult or something, and then I still die cause I don't get anything that scales even a little decently. Getting past black deck felt like I was just throwing myself at a wall until some half decent jokers showed up in the shop, and I don't know if I want to keep pushing if it's just gonna be like this all the way to gold.

The worst part is I actually had a decent start on blue steak just now, grabbed a rare joker tag and scored an eternal blueprint along with an eternal rocket (both jokers in the pack were also eternal? didn't take either of them because they did nothing for scoring or econ). I think, nice! This is a good start!

The best jokers that showed up were even steven, droll, and green joker.

The rest were either more of the same, or something like an eternal marble of banner, and the run died a sad death on ante 4. I spent so much damn money on rerolls fishing for jokers and didn't get ANYTHING better. No xmult, no other scalers, and the only chip cards I found were the eternal banner and an ice cream. What exactly was I supposed to do there? I can't skill my way into better jokers! I've had so many runs like this on both black steak and now blue steak, and it's at the point where the one win on black steak I got feels more like a fluke.

I don't even know where I'm going with this it's really really tiring to spend a ton of cash rerolling and the best joker that shows up is something like friggin bootstraps...

Green joker is a solid one...

(Stake is not the same as steak FFS!)

I mean, it isn't bad, but when it's the only thing that's giving a decent multiplier the run is kind of doomed

(also christ I can't believe i used the wrong stake. don't write things at 5 in the morning folks!)
A big part of higher stake runs is knowing what jokers are good and what jokers are good enough. Even the basic +4 mult joker is enough to solo the first two antes and it even helps a little bit after. Commitment is another thing you’ll need to get used to, as taking something like an eternal zany joker (+12 mult if hand contains three of a kind) may be necessary if it means keeping the run alive, albeit hurting long term potential. Even then, I’ve seen someone make it to ante twelve with three eternal zany jokers on gold stake, one joker slot won’t kill you.
Additional tip, skipping is rarely ever worth it, with the only exception being and the $25 on ante 1. Skipping makes you lose out on the chance to scale jokers, earn blind money, visit the shop, and earn interest. Not worth it for a random joker that has no guarantee of synergising or contributing decently to your build, not even mentioning the 60% chance of it being eternal, perishable, or rental.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Steak at any time of the day. :steamhappy:
this game is heavily knowledge based. When you get the jackpot hand, it is exhilarating!

i would really like a black list for some jokers! im trying to do the gold stake atm
Once you get into higher stakes you kinda just have to restart the run if you don't get anything good by ante 3-4.
Get the joker that gives 2 common jokers every round, then you can basically choose what you want
I feel your pain. As you unlock more jokers the game becomes harder as you're diluting the pool of potential shop buys with junk jokers. I used to reliably get a decent +chip joker and a +mult joker in the first few rounds that could carry a player quite far but now that I have nearly all the jokers unlocked, it's just garbage after garbage joker. There really needs to be a way to blacklist a certain number of jokers because it does take a lot of the fun away when you have to repeatedly restart a game after a few rounds because the shop is stocked with things like the 8 Ball, Superposition, To Do List, Séance, Matador, etc.

"8 Ball, Superposition, To Do List, Séance, Matador,"

Of those 5 jokers, 4 are available from the start, no unlock required. They don't "dilute' anything.
So why don't you focus on other jokers instead, like Stuntman, Wee, Onyx Agate, Arrowhead, Shoot the Moon and Swashbuckler that are all good +chips or +mult jokers that need to be unlocked? Not to mention Blueprint, Brainstorm, and a lot of xmult jokers that also need to be unlocked.
Banner and credit card are excellent early ante jokers! Honestly, Banner is one of my all around favorites as it justifies investing in easy hands. I second the suggestion to take "good enough." You don't get any extra rewards for exceeding the score requirement, so you just need to meet it. If you're staying alive there's no need to burn money on rerolls hunting for the best

Brainstorm is especially nasty because the unlock process requires you to do something blatantly detrimental. You'll likely lose a run you could easily have won unlocking Brainstorm, but it's worth it.

I've certainly been feeling this, and I'm not afraid of taking things like Green Joker or Obelisk. So many runs lost because I couldn't find a single point scoring joker. I've learned not to be picky, and you have to take what's offered, but there are times where actually nothing is offered. Can only get so far relying on planets for big hands to make points... especially when the flint comes up

Honestly, you shouldn't need to tank a run for it unless you go way out of your way to set it up.

If you just wait until the opportunity is convenient, you aren't at that big a disadvantage as a result. There's no prize for overkill, after all.

Brainstorm is really easy to unlock by just restarting repeatedly on the first blind with checkered deck. Should only take three minutes maximum.
