Joker Matador.
You play on the gold stake. You come across a rental joker Matador, which gives +8 bucks if the played hand activates the Boss Blind ability. You check what Boss Blind will be and you see that there will be a boss, which takes away 1 buck for each card played. Oh! This is our case! Let me spend 3 bucks per turn on the small and middle blinds, but I will recoup all these expenses on the Boss. You get to the boss and nothing works.
This card only works with cards crossed out with a red cross?

Matador works on around half of the boss blinds, but is not very intuitive. In this case you'd think it would work against the tooth but It's not the hand being played that activates the boss, but rather the boss blind happens every hand I guess. There's a reason this joker is being targeted in the next update for the game.
I'm not that experienced in this game, I haven't tried many strategies, I haven't explored many dark corners, but according to my estimates, there are very few cases when this card is useful. Sometimes it just has nowhere to show itself. Although this card gives a lot of money by the standards of this game.

Excluding ante 8 specific bosses it can trigger on 10/23 of the boss blinds, which is super bad. the few times it works it pops off but, again, there's a reason this is the one joker we know that is receiving an outright rework.

Yeah matador is badly designed. An easy way to activate him is to try to score a debuffed card.

Balatro tip: Don’t get attached to your Jokers.
They’re called wild cards for a reason.

As a general rule the Matador only triggers on avoidable boss blind abilities, meaning things you trigger by playing certain hands or cards that the boss blind doesn't want you to play. If a boss blind is instead something that innately happens no matter what Matador probably doesn't work.

I believe the only exception is The Flint, which obviously triggers on every hand but does activate Matador as far as I know.

This basically means you should only buy Matador if your upcoming boss is something you can manually activate the ability of at least a couple times without putting your run at risk, like debuffed cards, or something like must play 5 cards.
