So is the deck a standard 52 card poker deck?
Just watched a couple videos, but still not clear. Is the deck a standard 52 card poker deck? Or is it just random cards of any kind?

Start of a run, (barring 1 deck that is all Spades and Hearts, and a 2nd deck that has no faces), yes. You have have your 4 suits of 13. Once you are in a run you will have ways of altering your deck, either adding cards, modding suits/ranks, or even removing cards.

Thank you for this succinct answer. I think I get it now. I think I'll give it a try.
Note: for basic play, modifying your deck is usually secondary to other mechanics, though certainly useful. Your selection of jokers (persistently held cards with special effects) are the main focus.

There are also different decks you can unlock as you play, some of which affect your starting decks (such as a deck with all the face cards removed)

There's also the last deck you get where the cards in it are random per run.

But most decks start out regulation, yeah.
