Issue is, nothing changed about the game in quite a while, and that high FPS cap has always been there. So if the problem appeared suddenly, it can't really be an issue with the game. More likely something happened to the laptop, be it some driver or OS update or an issue with the hardware. We can't exactly diagnose that with the given information.
Maybe your thermal paste dried out, the heat causing the fan to spin harder to make up, and the fan draining your battery. But could be something else entirely, too.
