Yes, many have done so and enjoyed the game.

The one thing taken directly from poker is the hand types, like pair, flush, straight and such. But in the game, you can click a button to see what those hands are, no need for you to memorise them.

Else Balatro has its own rules, and it all starts with a tutorial.

You just need to know how to calculate the hand types

Theres the small blind, big bilnd thing lifted from poker too but that just means normal level, harder level respectively

To elaborate a little further, you just click 'Run Info' and then click on the poker hand that you want to see an example of. The poker side of things isn't hard, it's the various effects, synergies and interactions of the Jokers that really add depth.

The yes was in response to the question "it's possible to jump full blind on the game?"
Reading the rest of his post should make that obvious.

Yeah, there's a bunch of poker terminology sprinkled around, but it's barely related to the actual meaning of the term in poker. Just theming.

You need to know the cards combinations at least but the game tells you

Knowing the very basics will help, and knowing how easy or hard it is to make a certain hand will also help. And by help I just mean shorten the learning curve. If anything a deep understanding of poker strategy might actively hinder you, because Balatro breaks a lot of the core assumptions.

Fundamentally the game is a deck builder about playing combos. It is just themed on draw poker.

You only need to know the card combinations ("poker hands") that you will need to play in order to get points. Apart from that, it's what me and my friends have fondly defined as "what happens when you can play Blue Eyes White Dragon and the pizzeria's fidelity card as jollys"

I asked the same question almost a year ago now and I’ve played almost 30 hours. Can you match 2 numbers? Can you match 5 suits? Can you put 5 numbers in a sequential order?
You can play this game. Poker hands are really the foundation of the game. The actual game you’re playing is deck building and other roguelike things.

As a beginner myself I've found that going for a flush seems to be the easiest way to progress through the game so far, at least in the beginning. It's fairly easy to make a flush by simply discarding hands until you have one and odds are you'll get one quickly. Then build your jokers or anything that will give flush multipliers. Win.

Just know the basics and have a decent understanding of math.
You'll do fine.
Nightmyre Nov 28, 2024 @ 3:59pm
You need to know poker insomuch as you need to understand the math behind the game, and, more specifically, you need to understand probability. The more you understand it, the better chance you'll have, because the game relies on probabilities very heavily.

It's very easy to jump into the game not really knowing much about Poker. The most important thing is taking the time to learn how everything interacts with everything else. There are some great YouTube videos that explain the game and the strategies of the game.
Balatro University is probably one of the best places to really learn the ins and outs of the game. He has hundreds of videos on the game to watch and a 16 part playlist teaching the basics of the game.
