4 of a kind not a 2 pair?
Why doesn't a 4 of a kind count as a 2 pair? You got 2 pairs of the same card.

Surely because it can't be BOTH 4 of a kind and 2 pairs. Otherwise you could also count 5 of a kind as 5 high cards, and so on.

Idk it seems like a bug

Two pairs means two pairs of different cards. Not a bug, just poker rules.

Because its much hard statically to get 4 of the same card than two random pairs.

4 contains 2 twice, so of course its not a pair, its two pairs.

Thats not how balatro works, a full house is considered a three of a kind for its bozo.

my best guess is the resurion would be a little silly 4of counts as 3of and 2of already. otherwise 5of would also be a full house as well

yeah i noticed a flush that contains a pair in it also trigger pair based joker abilities. i havent tested it on 4 of a kind myself tho

Two Pair specifically has to be two *different* ranks, so four-of-a-kind does not contain two pairs (although it does contain one pair).

2 pairs does need to be pairs of different ranks, so while a full house technically contains 2 pairs, a 4/5 of a kind does not.

I do agree it's a bit ambiguous.

Same thing with straight flush and flushes. Just now I was in a situation where I needed to only make a flush (only play one type of hand), and accidentally I could make a straight flush, but that wouldn't count. Fortunately I had another card of the same suit and could make a regular flush. But it doesn't make sense that a straight flush wouldn't be good enough for the objective "make a flush".

The group name will be a four of a kind, not two pair as a two pair require two separate groupings. This is the reason why every jokers says it needs to *contain* two pair or whatever.

Calling 4 of a kind a two pair would be like calling a car for wheels because it has them.

I think the question is really the specific interaction you're looking at. Some things are worded specifically as "hand that contains" to allow them to trigger them on higher ranking hands.
Shot_Trip Feb 26, 2024 @ 12:15pm
Two pair is listed in the hand types as two pairs of different ranks. While some jokers - such as the hand type boosters - will count, say, three of a kind and a pair in a full house, four of a kind and two pair are *mutually exclusive* hands.
